I refereeed a game where a player was fouled but there was a very brief advantage, however, the ball was almost immediately put out of play by a defender 20 yards up the pitch. Was I wrong to ask if they prefered the throw in or go back for the free kick for the foul.

Not something I'd do personally, but I can't see why it's wrong as such. Might open a can of worms of "favouritism/bias" though. To be honest I think 20 yards is enough of an advantage for me to just give the throw unless it's very obviously not an advantageous outcome.

I don’t think there’s time to ask, makes it look like you’re indecisive. Just make a judgement call, including a consideration of how bad a foul it was. It it’s even remotely naughty, I’d give the foul so everyone knows you’ve seen it.

Either way make sure you communicate you have or attempted to play advantage. It has to be your decision. Both of those for game management. Nothing in law stops you from asking the players though.
