Reckless Challenge-after play stopped

had an instance where the ball hit my foot so I stopped for a dropped ball. Immediately after I blew the whistle to stop play, a player flew in with a reckless challenge. I carded him for reckless play and re-started with the dropped ball. As this happened when play had technically stopped, I was doubting my actions. No one picked up on it but just wondered if I should have done something else instead.

You were correct that one you had stopped playing the restart can't change.

I am a little more interested in why you stopped play 😊 what happened after the ball hit your foot?

By the way, my question wasn’t so much about the re-start but the caution, was the category correct?

Yes. A reckless challenge is the same with the ball on or out of play.
The reason I honed in on whether play should be stopped is it read like you stopped it because it touched you and not because it touched you and then one of the things happened that meant you had to stop play i.e. Possession changed, a team started a promising attack or the ball entered the goal.

The ball doesn't hit me very often at all I'm pleased to say, but on the one or two occasions that is has, I've found that virtually all the players around me all seem to stop and wait for me to do something(?) It's for that reason that I've found (irrespective of what the LOTG stipulate) that it's easiest to just blow the whistle and do what the game expects and award a dropped ball to the team that last touched it.

Disclaimer: Before the L3s and the Oz one pile in, I know that's incorrect in law, but I referee Dog & Duck level most days and never get observed! ;) :D

Actually I think if the players stop you're doing the right thing. I was observed as a level 4 the season this law came in (or there abouts) and the ball hit me and didn't change possession, begin an attack or the ball enter the goal, and as you say, everyone just totally stopped, and I stood there and did nothing and waited, while the players waited for me for what felt like forever, then eventually the team in possession played on with it, but it was the first thing the observer mentioned. He said if the game expects you to stop it, don't over complicate things. I think the higher you get, players know the law a little better and will carry on though.

I can totally understand the temptation. And in the context of that one individual game, it’s probably the simplest / safest / easiest thing to do.

However, the problems start the following week when a different ref takes a wholly legitimate different approach, in accordance with law and then gets pelters for it. Over time, football begins to increasingly ‘expect’ something that is incorrect in law and officials end up caught between a rock and a hard place. It’s where we used to be with the 6 second law, where we definitely still are with throw ins taken from obviously the wrong place too close to the team’s own goal and where long running myths like ‘Leave It’, ‘Last Man’ etc come from. As well as ‘all deliberate hand balls are YC’ and ‘GK handling outside the area is an automatic Red’ 😳

Overall, I’m a believer that when we knowingly act contrary to law, we set future expectations and it becomes a very slippery slope

Rant over  :)

To add a bit of context... I'm not talking about scenarios where the ball just hits me and nothing changes, suggesting we blow straight away. I'm talking about scenarios where the balls hits me and both teams totally stop expecting the drop ball. I think probably giving that drop ball because they've stopped but educating them that it doesn't actually need to stop there is a better outcome.

Thanks all but My initial question wasn’t necessarily about the re-start but more about the caution for the challenge immediately after I’d blown for a dropped ball.

Bold of you to think any thread on refchat would ever stay entirely on topic 😆

Threatening people violates our forum rules 🤔

(You're welcome @Kes)

Ps in my view we are discussing the content of the OP. So whilst they were seeking a specific reply to part of the scenario we are absolutely still on topic here as it pertains to the scenario directly in OP.
