The Ref Stop
We have been told:
  • Yes the Only the Captain Protocol is applicable across all competitions in England
  • Breach is disciplined with a caution for dissent (including temporary dismissal at Step 5 and below)
  • The protocol will be activated by telling the players, not by a gesture / signal

Interesting… I was told leagues could opt in/out. Is there any official clarification on that?

I tend to think we already have the tools to deal with this, but if it’s going to help behaviour then it’s no bad thing

Yes. The FA have confirmed all levels of game.

It is individual comps but they have to be sanctioned by FA and the FA have said captains only protocol is mandatory and will be used across all competitions under it's authority.

This is another case of already having the tools, but the higher echelons failing to use them.

It’ll end up like most changes; they’ll enforce it at higher level for a few weeks, only to forget all about it. We’ll then get people justifying why it wasn’t used, even though it’ll be clear as day that it should have been

It's not the answer
What happens on TV is all that matters

I don't think I bought into recent 'behaviour charters' as much as was expected at L4, and I'll struggle with this one as I don't want it

I can’t help thinking some referees will misinterpret it and cause themselves all kinds of problems. Like cautioning players who appeal for decisions, suppose technically that is speaking to the referee but it isn’t the intention of the law.

It's not at all times either. The referee invokes captains only and this creates an 4m exclusion zone around the referee and only the captains are allowed in this area and communicate. It is not a blanket captains only through the game.

I know, but the referees that can’t be bothered to keep up with laws will just see something about captains only and make a mess of it.

Yet more bias against us autistic referees 🤖
I don't think that's what is intended at all. Those referees who have a neuro divergence still have a personality and a uniqueness with which they can referee with.
I know it's not the same for everyone but this allows you to do what works, and is more comfortable, for you as opposed to having to conform to a specific way that is prescriptive.

Sorry I hoped the emoji would communicate the joke! If anything I have too much personality!

Out of interest, what is the thinking behind this change allowing officials to show their personality? How will this do that?
This won't specifically. But the message now is they dont want robot referees. I can't say I will do an awful lot different.
If you've seen the protocol for Captains only then I can see why they've opted to not use the signal in it although it will lose the outward signal to everyone that's happening but also it you get it done without having to resort to using signals and i think the thought process here will show a greater level of control. Time will tell I am sure.

If there is a push to allow referees to show their personalities, then I’m all for that. But it just seems odd that they spent so long basically creating robots, that they are now suddenly changing it.

As always when personnel changes happen things can go in a different direction.
Nathan Magill who has come in has a different take on things and this is now the direction of travel
