Ok there were two challenges I've seen on MOTD this evening. The first one on the Brentford player in the second half. The Villa player slips and takes out both his team mate and then also takes out the Brentford player so it was brushed aside by the commentary but seemed an obvious chance for VAR to get involved and the ref had no chance to see the foul.

The second one looked soft but I'd also argue that the defender has no need to push the player and anywhere else on the pitch its a foul so how is it not given? Brentford were definitely a bit unlucky today.

No videos sadly unless someone else can find them?

Ok that's fair enough but what is it to determine if a referee doesn't see something surely the VAR is there to clear it up and stop it becoming another of those talking points of the weekend? I think the VAR needs to be more proactive - especially if the position of the ref means that they can't see the actual foul from their standing position?

There's a set protocol they have to adhere to. Remember they aren't there to help the referee, they are there to correct clear and obvious errors. I know the challenge you are referring to do and think it probably should have been a penalty, but others will probably think it wasn't so it falls into the subjective category.

This, I believe, is the 2nd one.
I've not watched the match on this occasion as I was driving and had it on the radio and the commentators then thought it should've been a penalty kick. Not saying commentators are right, but they're more often not wrong.

What you are describing is basically re-refereeing the game. I don’t think anyone wants that.

I don’t like VAR, never have and never will. But I also wouldn’t like what you suggest.

No, that's not what VAR is there to do. As laid out in the protocol, VAR is there to assist the referee only in the event of a clear and obvious error or serious missed incident in relation to 4 clearly-defined, key match-changing scenarios.

It's not there to try to avoid talking points.
