So I had a women's match at the weekend where both teams supplied ARs, one was a sub that meant was changing regularly and the other in their late teens. The subs always seemed to be looking for direction on which direction to flag or decision to give on goal kicks/corners.

Even though I was keeping up with the game mostly, I was having to try and make decisions through crowds of players as to who touched it last when the AR should’ve been in a far better position but didn’t make the calls until I raised my arm, a couple of times I was questioned and then in one case after making a call the player owned up to touching it which although meant i corrected the call made me feel like my decisions were punts and that I had my authority of the game undermined.

The other teenage club AR gave a few early offsides, none of which were overly questionable but the other team already started moaning about “a kid running the line”. We get to the second half and had 2 instances where the team we ball looked to be close to the sideline. The first one the AR has the best view down his line, the other team stop running and then his team continue to attack up the pitch - it looked very close but one of those where you just know by the players reactions that it had gone off with 3 of the teams player going mad with disbelief when I shouted “still on” and backed the AR. Soon after another close one straight down his line, the opposing team are attacking towards him but has a clear view. The players dribbles appears to just about keep it on but the AR inline flags that it’s gone off, my view was that it didn’t look like it had but the flag was up and having a clear view the AR had a much better position to judge. The team again in disbelief start going on at me about the age and telling me I need to make my own decisions.

By the end of the match I feel I had lost credibility with both teams due to the confusion between myself and the ARs. Any advice how to handle situations like this when you don’t feel you’re particularly being assisted?

Two easiest ways to avoid this that I find work well:

I don't let substitutes or under 18s run the line.

The former can be harder to argue but basically say you need to brief whoever does it and cannot do that 3-4 times a game. The latter just say it's a safeguarding issue (which it is).

If having a certain club AR is detrimental to the way the game is refereed, ask for someone else to do it. You are entirely within your rights to do that.

I want to say that the SCOR says no one under the age of 16 can act as an AR I'm any capacity...

2. In cases where there are no officially appointed Match Officials in attendance, the Clubs shall agree upon a referee. An individual thus agreed upon
shall, for that Competition Match, have the full powers, status and authority of a registered referee. Individuals under the age of 16 must not
participate either as a referee or assistant referee in any Competition Match

You could land yourselves with problems taking that approach. SCoR is clear that they have to be 16, not sure how it can be a safeguarding issue given a 16 year old could play in an open age game.

In my area some grassroots league rules say each club MUST provide an assistant referee so it might be problematic to turn down a substitute doing it (even though I agree with you it would make life easier!)

My usual Saturday league doesn’t allow CARs at all and it’s much easier

CAR’s not allowed to give offsides up my way. It’s ball in and out on touchlines and that’s it.

Mind you, my pre-match to some NAR’s wasn’t much different.

This is covered under SCoR, rule 23C states ...

Where assistant referees are not appointed each Team shall provide a Club assistant referee. Failure to comply with this Rule will result in a fine in accordance with the Fines Tariff.

None of that is in italics or quotes which means is it mandatory to be included in a league's rules. I know that some leagues don't want CARs so they set the fine for this to zero to make sure clubs aren't penalised for breaching it. But it is a mandatory rule, so if a club provides a CAR, even if they are 16, they have met that requirement.
