The Ref Stop

Nottingham Forest vs Aston Villa

The Ref Stop
yeah your call about yellow is right, just for a different reason than what you mentioned, no attempt to play ball rather than stopping an attack

The yellow would still be for SPA if we're being technical. It just doesn't get downgraded in the penalty area because it was a hold.

you could stop an attack inside the area and have made an attempt to play the ball= no yellow, so not quite

Agree this is a pen, and not “fleeting” since it has an immediate impact on the attacking player.

Question on the VAR protocol - if the VAR believes that the pull is a clear and obvious offence, but also that the tug of the shirt by Rogers on Anderson just before is a possible foul (but not clear and obvious) is this still a penalty review, or does the fact that Rogers’ action was a possible foul mean that the PK is no longer clear and obvious?

If we go off the VAR protocol based in the actual laws (and not whatever the PL is up to) the correct procedure would be to bring the ref to the monitor for a clear PK (which I think it was) and then allow the ref to make the final decision about a possible foul in the APP.

Also is “fleeting” even a consideration when the attacking player is in possession of the ball? Feels like this guidance should only be for holding in the area when a cross is coming in, not for when a player is running with the ball. Most pull-backs are fleeting but they’re still fouls, and usually cautions.

EPL don't have a monopoly on how crap VAR is, so no point going down that hole?
But Martinez save? What about that? Possibly save of the season that

Any pull/holding is only an offence if it impedes the opponent’s movement, so I would say that how "fleeting" it is is definitely relevant.

best save ive seen in quite a white absolutely no idea how he did that. Could have also potentially been a yellow for hudson odoi there for simulation

Whoever is responsible for us not having semi automated offsides need to resign. Pathetic that's has to take so long
They'll need to get AI to drown out the 'Fook VAR' din. That was very loud, clear and prolonged. Not a good advert for the game

Looks like a clear penalty to me, not sure why that wasnt given
You could argue they were both guilty of pulling & shirt holding, I suspect both referee & VAR deemed it was 50/50 on holding & pulling?
