I mean when a free kick is so blatant a defender picks up the ball (and you've just waved away the free kick I'd use any trick in the book to bring it back for the FK.
Defender is stupid but I'd hate myself giving this.

sort of agree but also don't

defender is naïve, especially because something similar happened earlier in the game!

I can see where you are coming from but it also doesn't quite sit right. Play hasn't been stopped. You can't pick the ball up. It's essentially an advantage situation.
A totally bizarre situation I'll agree too.
 
I hate it when a fouled player grabs the ball BEFORE the ref has blown the whistle even if it is an obvious foul. I always want the ref to give handball but they never seem to. This is a strange sort of reversal of the situation. Very silly of the defender !
