1: Derby v Norwich (1:15) - goal scored after ball out of play

2: Leeds v Coventry (2:17) - potential penalty rather clumsy challenge from behind, think ref could have anticipated and got a slightly better angle?

3: Blackburn v QPR (1:58) - SFP

4: Birmingham v Peterborough (6:26) - winning goal scored with arm

5: Morecambe v Notts County (1:16) - close goal line decision leads to dismissal - not sure if there's any better angles out there

  1. Feels like an absolute clanger by the AR, I had to watch 2/3 times to see where he was and can only assume he is by the corner flag based on him running back after the goal is awarded. His positioning couldn't be better and still missed it - concerning

  2. No penalty - goes down far to easily and would put it in the "looking for it" category

  3. No discussion.... but what is Craig Pawson doing refereeing in the Championship? Demotion?

  4. Handball absolutely, but not one player appeals it and not sure the ref sees it, possibly for the AR to call but a tough one regardless

  5. No idea 🤣 but I would argue the reaction of the red team players in the box, especially the one on the line, suggests that it hasn't clearly crossed the line.

SG1 officials often referee in the championship, and not out of demotion/poor performance although it is often reported (incorrectly)as such. I think there is some obligation that SG 1 officials cover x amount of games outside of PL across the season.

PGMOL are contracted to cover 3 non-EPL games a week with SG1 officials. The press and fans often mistakenly assume that a referee in the Championship has been demoted but that is rarely the case.

Clip 1 is the kind of decision that VAR was introduced for. One where we can all look and know it’s a clamger; no if buts or maybes.

Not for decisions like the Fernandes one at the weekend

When was the last time we saw Michael Oliver or Anthony Taylor dusting off their EFL badge?

I actually did my own homework and if the website "sports mole" is reliable Taylor has refereed one game and Oliver none in the last 12 months, I assume there is a different rule/expectation for referees who have European and International games?

Once I ended up down the wormhole of Premier League referees... I stumbled across something interesting = Paul Tierney hasn't refereed since May, anyone know any reason why? No apparent retirement annoucement and all Google throws up is the dropped ball situation in the Forest - Liverpool game.

I don't know exactly why but I think he could have picked up an injury potentially as he hasn't been dropped completely. He's had 7 VAR appointments in the PL this season. The one I find most intriguing is Tom Bramall. Not one appointment at all in the PL this season (in any capacity). It's certainly not because of the Forest - Liverpool incident as he refereed 7 PL matches after that incident last season

April 2018 was the last time MO refereed an EFL regular season game (MW40 in the Champ.). He has also refereed 2 Champ. play-off games since then though.

Much less likely to send the FIFA referees to the EFL for the reason you state, they already have more games than anyone else due to the international games.

As for missing referees, they get injured just as players do, the difference is PGMOL don't announce when referees are injured like clubs do for players. Probably because no one would be in the slightest bit interested in knowing, expect perhaps other referees. Tom Bramall is probably a good reference, as I know he suffered a very serious knee injury a few years ago and missed most of a season, just an example that it does happen.
 
This weekend Sunderland vs Leeds, Sheff Utd vs Luton and Bristol City vs Cardiff don't yet have match official appointments, so they will very likely all be SG1 officials. When there is a Monday night EPL game they won't appoint the SG1 officials until Tuesday.

For no.1.... I'm not entirely convinced AR1 could get the most ideal view, judging by the attackers position sliding to hook in the cross.

Blackburn QPR. At end of those highlights, foul given before qpr put the ball in surely never a foul? Looks like Pawson was too far out and took the easy (wrong) option?

AR does not have a freeze frame.

I'd agree if the AR was a long way up the pitch, in that case they might have to guess. I haven't seen an image with the AR in it, but in theory he should be at least as far down the line as where that defender is stood, giving him pretty much the same view as the camera shot, and an AR in the pro game should be spotting that every time.

The image in #13 shows the AR approaching the line, but not quite there.

By PL/FL standards, that’s a long way out of play. When you can see they’re down to mm’s when it comes to offsides, half the width of the ball out of play is massive.
