Hi all. Just after some advice / information on holding pre-game chats with two neutral ARs. I have now been given the opportunity this coming season to be involved in games with neutral ARs, both as an AR and Middle Referee.

Some advice on what should be included in the pre-game chat, any additional information, thinking of creating a pre-game chat card that I can slide into my refereeing wallet to keep for this season, to make sure I don’t miss any points.

Thanks
Dave

Always check how experienced they are. Ask in detail!

I’ve had previously, found out 10 mins to kick off it was both guys’ first time holding a flag (first year NARs).

Last night I asked as usual but not in enough detail. NAR1 said he had done plenty of matches. However, at half time I found out this was match #5. In post match I found his subs notes illegible and he had not taken any times.

#MakingTheMistakes so you don’t have to;)

If you have “new” NARs then your pre-match probably needs to be super basic things (I do e.g. goal/no-goal, wait and see, mass cons… and take your time).

That video of Madley's pre-match instructions is really good, but it is extremely long. He is putting on a bit of an act for the cameras and he's massively encouraging some young lads.

My advice is keep it relevant and concise. Most of the time. Just gauge their experience and let them know your preferences and the quirks to your game.
