Would you go to a job interview chewing gum?
Imagine attending a job interview in football socks and blowing a whistle every time you see/hear something you don't like.

I'm not sure what your point is.
And that has what relevance exactly? A referee isn't going for an interview, they already have the job.

I wouldn't wear two watches, a sweat band and thermals under my clothes to a job interview. I certainly wouldn't apply deep heat.
However, I do the above most weeks for refereeing.
I think this is a terrible way to measure what is appropriate.
I do get being upset with chewing gum, but when I was at school our psychology teacher handed out chewing gum during exams as it is meant to increase concentration.

No where did I state a job interview is a football match.
In fact, pretend this isn't a refs forum. Forget refereeing. Forget football.

If you want "unprofessional gum use", I once ran a line for a ref who filled his pocket with a handful of some kind of gum/gum-shaped sweet so that he could keep himself topped up as the game went on. For reasons only known to him, he also put his yellow card in the same pocket - so the first card issued was accompanied by a waterfall of gum pellets onto the pitch!
I quite often scratch my nuts on the pitch when the under shorts and sweat are making them itch, I wouldn't do that in a job interview either.
I get both sides of this argument. Personally I wouldn't do it, and I can see that if a referee was perceived to have made a mistake it's a stick a team might choose to use to beat them with. With that said, they've been known to use me smiling as a stick to beat me with before, so they really will pick on anything!
