What on earth just happened?

Straight red for a trip + dissent? Surely it should have been two yellows followed by a red?

The Referee Store
Walton appeared to say not walking over was an insulting gesture so a straight red was correct in law.

Presume the referee saw/heard something that was actually OFFINABUS

I actually think it was for the studs down the leg, not once the ref got the yellow out, imo the ref was going to show a red regardless because especially in Europe, those type of challenges are frown upon.

I stopped watching after the second goal but for anyone who hasn’t watched it. Its worth noting that the ref has been using the cards from his wallet.
I believe the first booking of the game, the player saw a red from the wallet but was actually getting booked.

not sure if the same with this red or if he had the yellow from the wallet

If he'd gone yellow for the SPA followed by yellow for the dissent I'd have no complaints, but it seems like he skipped the details. Don't buy that he was always going red - if that's the case you don't worry about a neat process, meeting him halfway etc, you get the card out and get the player off.

The yellow was on top for the majority of calling over. Then he got angry and showed the red.

Walton making up nonsense to justify a decision? You shock me...

Lots of legit explanations for what might have happened, that isn't one of them.

It’s never a red is it really, it’s a cynical trip and then he’s retreated to his position. You’d think at that level there would be more “game management” in mind and some sort of consideration for keeping 11 on the pitch.

This is a perfect example for an explanation by the referee post match which is wanted by most fans.

Rather odd

In the EPL it would've been communicated to the broadcaster through the 4th official, or the VAR check.

But what the BBC wrote doesn't make sense at all. Even if he intended to give a yellow and decided there was subsequent OFFINABUS, he should have showed the yellow first and then the red. It will be interesting to see if there is any follow up explanation that comes out.

According to BT, the ref give the red for the foul which was studs down the back of the leg, did not seem alot of contact but I have seen them given as reds before so I would say the ref got it spot on.

I don't buy that - as I said earlier, that's not the body language of a referee eager to get the player off the FoP. Until he's had enough and just flashes the card.

Everyone referees differently I guess.

For me, I find it funny people thought he got a straight red just because he was ignoring the referee! Peter Walton was comedy gold for the wrong reasons sadly!

That was my instinct as well. I had a training seminar two season ago before COVID, where they said pretty what you have today.

Watching that replay, he studs him in the heel. No arguments from me, that's a straight red.
