    Young referees story

The part of the video that really frustrated me was the interview with the guy from the FA. All he talked about was support for referees, not stamping out the abuse. Seemed like he was saying, abuse of referees was OK, we will just help them deal with it.

Your most embarrassing moments as a referee / AR

All of these were in U12 games a couple of years ago. Running the line as CAR for my son's game. Crabbing right, right studs catch in mud, fall over, roll and jump up hoping nobody saw. All the parents on the over touch line saw it. Could hear the laughter. Jogging backwards at goal kick...

Bizarre things you notice from matches

I also CAR regularly for my son's team and they are always playing attackers onside. I think it is because at a younger age it is drummed into them to be 'goal side' of attackers. They get very nervous to have an attacker nearer to their goal than they are. For me it gets frustrating, in my...

    My first game

In my son's league they play all rules at that age group. Its 9v9, shorter halves but all other laws applied including offside.

Pick the bones out of this

Well I think the ref has now closed his twitter account to being viewed, as I have just read the thread and can't see any of his comments.

Drop ball position after hitting overhead wire

I can see the logic to that. But, in most cases when it hits the wire it drops dead to the ground and I am struggling to see how any of the three options given under the 'touching a match official' part fits.

Drop ball position after hitting overhead wire

True. This occurred at a thrown in, straight into the wire. At the time seemed right thing to just retake. But on re-reading not the correct thing to do.

The former. He didn’t say it to me, so not questioning me. I heard it later. Just made me think about the pros and cons.

Drop ball position after hitting overhead wire

I often referee on a 3G pitch which has a wire crossing the centre of the 11 a side pitch, which is used to hold a net to split up the pitch when used for 5 a side games. The sports centre won't take it down for 11 a side matches. I always brief both teams about what will happen. "If it skims...

    Over head lines

Yes, I do this as well. A couple of weeks ago a throw in rebounded off the wire. The most sensible thing to do seemed to be retake throw in.

    Over head lines

I referee on a similar pitch. If the ball clips the wire but keeps going in the same general direction, play on. If it hits the wire and drops dead or goes off wildly, drop ball to team who had possession. I explain this to both coaches before kick off.

When to wear different coloured shirt?

Here is the official news item from Essex FA web site: http://www.essexfa.com/news/2018/oct/25/alternative-referee-shirt-colours I'm a bit out of date, it seems you can use *any* alternative colour for most matches, however, Volt is the only alternative allowed for "When officiating in...

When to wear different coloured shirt?

    Yes, the volt colour.

When to wear different coloured shirt?

Essex FA have sanctioned the use of the bright green alternative colour for grassroots football. This happened last year. But I also think that some League rules have something about alternative colours as well.

Advice on some obscure match incidents

Agree with making sure it is sorted. Had a player lose a boot on Sunday, played on until it went out for a throw in. Waited for him to sort out the boot. He looked gobsmacked when I also told him to do up his laces on his right boot while he was at it as well.
