I'm not too keen on finding a reason to send a player off for balance (or game management). Giving free kicks in a non critical area or even a caution is often acceptable but sending a player off and giving penalties are just a step too far.

Let's say Foden did not kick out at Fernandes. If Fernandes was send off for his actions there would have been uproar. With Foden kick out, sending Fernandes off would just be to even things out which for me is not a thing.

I was going off the EFL site. However, I don't know anything about him, so guessing this info below is incomplete or too brief

No, it is correct that he has been a VAR, but he isn't a specialist VAR. I'm not sure there are any such creatures after the failed experiment with Mike Dean and Lee Mason.

If VAR had not been introduced into the Premier League, what would the outcome have been?

As it was given offside people would have just accepted it as Haaland looked from the TV angle. Had the goal been given the broadcasters would have drawn their own lines, incorrectly, said the assistant was wrong and demanded there should be technology to help the officials.

It's worse than we thought, Donohue and Antrobus completely forgot to check whether Fernandez had committed an offside offence. They only checked for a touch by him in case it made Haaland offside.

Yikes. That makes it an even bigger miss than only considering interfering with play and interfering with an opponent. I can understand how an AR could miss that but it's really hard to understand how a VAR team missed it that completely--especially once they were looking at whether Enzo had a touch.

EDIT to add: Hmm. Could it have something to do with the two systems? The system told them that Halland was on, and they didn't focus on anyone else because the system didn't tell them he was off.

Hearing the audio and I think this for me reflects badly more on the AVAR because his complete silence during the whole check is unhelpful and he should be there as those extra pair of eyes on the footage and should be 100% concentrated.

The process for the SAOT does seem quite a bit of a faff on which no doubt does not help the VAR as more and more time elapses and you can clearly tell the VAR is getting more edgy with the RO during the APP part of the check in terms of time it's taken. That is not an issue with just Matt Donohue, I find a good number of VAR's get quite edgy with the replay operators in terms of getting the check done quickly and finding the right angles. Quite a few of them do seem to talk down like they are just very young uni students being spoken to in a school teacher type of way.

As Dermot Gallagher usually says, that extra 30 seconds could prevent all this and accuracy should always come before efficentcy.
