The Ref Stop
Early on there was a retaliatory tackle by Argentina on England which by itself was a yellow card offence, but he also struck the back of the players head with force which is a clear red card offence for violent conduct.

If ref missed it, why does VAR not get involved?

Or am I wrong?

Well, yes. At least one delaying restart, one red for sub delaying opponent’s restart, reckless yellow for Fernandez, reckless yellow for Simeone, how many yellows do you want for “only the captain.”

If I was being observed by my local sensei, he’d have me at 5 missed yellows and a missed red.

Of course, Fifa have moved with the goalposts with the world cup of chaos refereeing so maybe the law book will be rewritten so these aren’t mandatory anymore.

Missed caution for Tuchel as well in my opinion. It’s one thing to be frustrated over the occasional decision, but it felt like every time the cameras cut to him he was ranting to the 4th official about something.

Nothing the referee did/didn't do last night affected the outcome in my opinion.

England, both defensively and tactically were embarrassing.

I've grown used to this disappointment over the years but in games against them it's usually been poor officiating that's caused that disappointment. Not so this time. This time it was us. :wall:

Playing them at rugby on Saturday on their own patch which I'm now looking forward to.

Football can bugger off until then ....

Wilton Sampaio

Szymon Marciniak
Maurizio Mariani
Glenn Nyberg
João Pinheiro
Slavko Vinčić

I think it's probably safe to assume those who were appointed to semi-finals can be ruled out of receiving another appointment (although I thought it was safe to assume Marciniak would get a SF, so who knows) - that's Barton, Elfath, Mariani and Nyberg gone. I think it's also safe to assume Marcianiak won't be given the final again - I'd be surprised if he got the 3rd place game either, given that he won't have done a game for over three weeks by that point. Jayed and Eskas have both had 4O appointments in the knockout stages which would appear to preclude them from getting the middle in either of the two remaining games. I really don't think Faghani will get the middle for either game after the two OFRs in the Mexico-England game (not to mention the OFR he extraordinarily turned down in France-Senegal). I have the feeling Pinheiro won't get a further game, having a done a QF (and having needed the controversial 'mistaken identity' OFR to spot Embolo's obvious dive).

That leaves Makhadmeh, Valenzuela, Sampaio and Vinčić.
 
Wouldn't shock me to see Elfath get the final also. He will be perceived to have performed well last night and while it's rare for semi final referees to referee finals, it's not totally unprecedented and we all know what could potentially go in his favour.

Will the Argentina players who held up a political statement about The Falklands be banned for the final?

Remember Rodri and Morata were banned for a song about Gibraltar being Spanish during post Euro 2024 celebrations in Madrid.

Hamstring tendinopathy. Struggling to make the September fitness test

Back to the game though. The FA will stick by Tuchel but I can't see a way back for him (untenable). The game leaves a dirty stain on our chequered history.
I was jealous of the Argies, yet held them in admiration. They have a national identity, togetherness and spirit we'll never be able to match.
I love to see a side employ the tactics they dished out early in the game. They masterfully gauged what they could get away with and I've always enthusiastic about finding any way to win. Even at Step 5, the best teams usually employ everything in their powers to finish top of the league

That 40 minutes of 12% possession and pitch littered with defenders was comically bad and quite sobering. A remarkable thing, but after 6 cans of Holsten Pils, I reckon I'd have passed the breathalyser within 10 minutes of the final whistle

Seriously? Sure, there could have been a caution, but calling that a “miss” just isn’t consistent with how professional games, especially the WC, are handled.

I think you're right. It's a missed opportunity, sure, but not missed as in he has committed a mandatory caution offence (subjectivity and threshold are key here).
 
I mean look, the elbow in the back of Elliott's head set the tone. But the ref is executing a mandate of keeping the card count down. On that basis, he did a great job. I'm largely in favour of this old skool approach, but it's gone too far in this tournament at times. What's certainly gone flying out the window, is any attempt to manage participant behaviour by way of sanction. Have we seen any dissent cautions? I can't recall any DTR yellows.

It's been fun to watch overall, but it's set the precedent for the impending season and it's certainly added to the challenges we'll encounter quite soon

Norway got one in the England game but I gather you were several Holsten Pils deep by that point too!
