The Ref Stop

France v Paraguay

The Ref Stop
sorry that its come to this stage, but does anyone know if this ref is usually incompetent. theres bad foul recognition and then theres... this. something seems very dodgy

He wouldn’t be there if he wasn’t. People don’t get to world cups by accident.

Perhaps the occasion got to him 🤷‍♂️
You have to wonder how much politics factored into this. Tantashev is an Uzbek, just like Ravshan Irmatov. Irmatov - who clearly had his own issues on the field in World Cups - still does a lot with FIFA.

This isn't about "well, he's from a country that doesn't have a top professional league". There have been a number of good performances by officials from nations that aren't major footballing hotbeds. Ivan Barton (El Salvador) has had two good performances. I get these two do Champions League, but Nyberg and Eskas have been really good. Elfath was solid on Spain-Uruguay (not teriffic, but definitely not bad). I know I'll probably catch some heat for this, but I even thought Makhadam (sp - the Jordanian who did the England game) did a good job (full disclosure that I thought the non-penalty call on Kane was the right call, as I though Kane went down before contact - I know that will not be received well here).

All of that to say that this isn't about referees who aren't from big UEFA or CONMEBOL countries not being able to do a World Cup game. Tantashev was just bad.

I know we all have games where it goes wrong. And having it go wrong in front of a huge audience is awful.

But… you have to up your own game. Do what needs to be done and then take everything else on the chin and own your shortcomings.

He hasn’t done anything like that. I can’t call this a learning experience, not even euphemistically. This a dereliction of duty.

I have some sympathy. The penalty, Almiron had got in front of Doue and it was another defender who did the trip. My first impression was that Doue had lost the ball and initiated - though on replay it is an obvious foul.

There were plenty of occasions when the referee didn’t stand for nonsense - so much nonsense - and he left a lot of bodies and deserves credit for that.

I think he might have been let down a few times by AR1. The Mbappe handball, and wrong throw in direction, could have both been lead by the AR.

Why does everything has to be a conspiracy? I just think the game was too big for him and his threshold for yellow cards was way too high but then you get people complaining when too many yellows gets given out aswell.

It's not helpful when there is a lot of players play acting either and France were no angels in this either it must be said.

As a neutral though, the way the Paraguay players were approaching it and the referees tolerance meant it did give the game an extra edge which made it watchable, kind of a throwback when rough tackles were aloud.

Shocking performance, but I suspect it comes down to FIFA to come extent. They've clearly told referees to be lenient and only caution when it is really necessary. The better referees have understood that directive, for example Michael Oliver earlier today who had 6 cautions in the first half. Tantashev clearly hasn't, has taken it far too literally and felt that he just couldn't get his card out. Somewhat ironically as his first caution for Barcola was completely wrong.

The lack of a caution for scuffing the penalty mark is beyond inexcusable, one of the team just has to see that.

I think the refereeing has been good this WC but I honestly think I could have done no worse a job tonight. And even then after reflect I’d think I’d had a shocker.

Really poor.

The scuffing the penalty spot behind the referee - also should be AR1 ensuring the card gets given.

Or the 4O, or the 5O . . .

Overall, I think the game has been much too tolerant of nonsense before PKs—especially after VAR review has taken place. What should be done is make clear to teams that not clearing out is going to be cautioned, and do it. But FIFA won’t do that because they are too afraid of send offs.

There were two round of 16 World Cup matches today. Both started very physical. Both had referees who have shown they can officiate how FIFA has asked and tried to allow the game to flow and keep the cards in the pocket.

One ref (Michael Oliver) realized it wasn't working and adapted to the game. He had 7 yellows in 49 minutes. He ended with 8 and a very quiet last 30 minutes.

The other ref never adapted. And it produced one of the worst performances I can remember in a World Cup.

This is just sad. No foul recognition, no confidence, no management ability. The penalty should have been an easy on-field call, as should a bunch of other fouls.

This was simply terrible assigning. The only possible thing I can consider is Collina and his assigning team thought France would cruise to an easy win and that they could somehow hide Tantashev. That clearly did not happen. This is the equivalent of a Sunday morning men's league match or an American men's junior college match where the referee loses control early and never has a chance to regain it.

The contrasts between Michael Oliver and Tantashev being able to rein in a challenging game - or not - are striking.
Can’t hide anyone at this level of football & nor indeed at any level of football. There must have been good reason for his appointment, but just not worked out on the day & as has been said, (extremely) likely to be on a plane home.

That was very anti football from Paraguay, a team well versed in the dark arts, and the referee did not show any strength in dealing with it.
I'm not one to overly criticise referees but I think the refereeing fell short of the required standard expected at this level of the game in this one.
No cautions for Paraguay (up until I stopped watching shortly after the 4th quarter started with 15 mins to go 🙄) is absolutely wild.

Once you are on a downward spiral and you know it, you get your simple stuff or things that are your bread and butter wrong. And if you havn't had one (or more) of these games no matter how good you are then you have not refereed long enough.

We had a sports psychologist running an online session in our RA training night two weeks ago. A big part of it was about being able to 'park decision' at the right time.
