I saw this the other day and wondered if the upgraded var-advised red card was correct. Celtic appealed and have lost the appeal.

I wondered about the direction of play and the possible covering defender were enough to save him.

It appears not:

Live I'm going yellow. When broken down like that I'm happy that would be a clear and obvious error

I think the ball is going very wide so there's a question mark about direction, and by the time he gets it the defender in the middle would clearly have moved over so there's a real doubt about defenders. Should have been referee's call in my opinion, don't see how this can be a clear and obvious error for VAR to get involved with.

Orange for me with direction and no of defenders in doubt. VAR interevent wasn't correct but the final decision of red card wasn't clearly wrong.

In terms of appeal, it all depends on what they can appeal. Can they appeal a VAR intervention? Or is it only the final decision they can appeal? For me the former was clearly wrong but the latter was an acceptable decision.

Pretty sure they can only appeal the final outcome as that is what the player is suspended for. They are in effect appealing the suspension not the decision.

That's what I thought too but their reply could be it was the VAR intervention that lead to the final outcome.
