A trip, or a deliberate kick on the leg of an opponent with no attempt to play the ball? An important difference . . .

Interesting one this. I’ve long since advocated that any kick at an opponent should be a red card but have often been shot down for it. If the ball was a bit closer would people still be saying clear VC? I don’t really see this as much different to the ones where the player is getting away and they are just kicked down, no challenge for the ball so easy VC.

I agree with you on this one, because this is definitely a 'kick' rather than an intentional trip. For me proximity of the ball is secondary, its the type of kick/action that's important imo

Such an unnecessary challenge, born out of frustration (and head loss). A yellow here indicates that the other 21 players can all do it once as well. Get him gone and save your match control. Player’s issue, not mine.

Guessing the referee saw it as a reckless but genuine attempt to play the ball and thus went yellow, but its quite clearly on watching back a deliberate and violent kick at the player. Red card.

A similar clip was shown at an RA meeting as part of a presentation by a current EFL referee. I felt that as the ball wasn’t there and was a deliberate kick it should be a red card. However, the referee doing the presentation and an SG2 referee was there both said the PGMO guidance was the level of “brutality” only warranted a yellow in the particular clip.!
On the way out of the meeting, instead of saying goodbye to the referee I walked up behind and kicked him up the arse. When he turned round, not amused, I said “don’t worry, it wasn’t with brutality”!
This is 100% a true story.

Managed to find a video that is not geo blocked, 100% red card.

I made the same mistake as this referee in a futsal game several years ago in a futsal game but an almost identical 'challenge'. Then I had several yellow cards and 2 red cards in the ensuing 5 minutes and eneded up abandoning the game. Lesson learnt.
