Well it's finally happened, a referee(Darren England) rejecting an review at the monitor for a potential handball.

I have to say I can understand initially why the VAR sent him there with the arm out and therefore the ball being blocked from coming into the box but the more I have seen it, it does look like a natural running motion too me and I can accept this not being a handball.

I'm hoping this will be included on the mic'd up show, always want too see how and why two different SG1 referees have different opinions on a subjective decision. I suspect the VAR is focusing on the arm coming down and blocking the ball whilst being away from the body whilst the referee probably thinks it's a natural running motion.

Welcome to interpretations of handball. I am not surprised at all.

Not an offence for me. Not only his hand movement and position was was inline with his legal body movement, you can see he also actively tried to avoid the ball, he just didn't have enough time.

I suspect VAR paid a lot of attention to "his hand making his body bigger" and "hand to ball" and very little attention to natural/unnatural movement.

Well hearing the audio on this incident and it's kind of how we expected with the VAR focused too much on the arm being away from his body and the referee believing the arm is coming back in and the proximity being too close.

As I say, I understand why a review may be recommended but this is the type where a referee sticking with his original decision of no penalty is the correct one.

I do suspect however if the referee does give the pen, then it wouldn't be overturned regardless who is on VAR.
