Not for the first time recently… Romero (?) goes down clutching face (feigning serious injury), no offence and Michael Oliver stops play to attend to the player.

The player is obviously not seriously injured. The restart is a dropped ball.

But Michael Oliver does not ask the player to leave the field of play. Oh and it is also s deliberate time wasting ploy bang on 45 mins as the player’s team are being outplayed.

Is this just another law to add to the list that is now ignored in the EPL?

It's quite clear Romero isn't caught in the face like he exaggerates!

On your point about MO not asking him to leave the FOP, I don't believe he has to as he hasn't received any treatment from the physio.

“stops play if a player is seriously injured and ensures that the player is removed from the field of play.”

Surely the whole point of this part of the laws was written to stop players delaying the game by feigning injury with no deterrent.

What counts as a "serious injury" then?

There's many times where a referee stops play and it's obvious the player isn't seriously injured, guess that's wrong in law then?

71 Ward feigns injury to stop a Spurs promising attack. Again dropped ball and allowed to stay on after a quiet word.

Law seems clear to me and was introduced to stop elite level time wasting:

  • allows play to continue until the ball is out of play if a player is only slightly injured
  • stops play if a player is seriously injured and ensures that the player is removed from the field of play.

If a player is so injured that you need to stop the game for a dropped ball, they need to leave.

The exception about staying on if treated quickly applies if the opponent was YC/RC.

No he didn't. He had the ball blasted at him full force in the chest from point blank range, that would take down any player. Did Oliver have to stop play? No, but at 3-0 and with the ball out by the touchline it was common sense refereeing.

Dont forget the part you cut off

stops play if a player is seriously injured and ensures that the player is removed from the field of play. An injured player may not be treated on the field of play and may only re-enter after play has restarted;

You are missing the actual relevant part of law ...

if the referee has authorised the doctors and/or stretcher bearers to enter the field of play, the player must leave on a stretcher or on foot. A player who does not comply must be cautioned for unsporting behaviour

The referee quickly checks the player to see if he is OK and doesn't authorise treatment then the player doesn't have to go off.

We have to disagree there. He went down to stop the attack for me. Clear as day. Whichever, the scenario still stands. Play was stopped for a serious injury.

We will definitely have to disagree then, I know from playing that getting the ball blasted at you from point blank range takes all of the wind out of you. The last thing you are thinking at that time is about breaking up the opponent's play.

I’ll paste it again.

You are writing new meaning into laws that is not wtitten.

The law says

“…stops play if a player is seriously injured and ensures that the player is removed from the field of play. An injured player may not be treated on the field of play and may only re-enter after play has restarted;”

It seems clear that if there’s no offence and an injury is serious enough for the referee to stop play, the injured player has to leave.

This is not new either. And has not changed AFAIK. It is just not being applied now in the EPL.

Still on topic, why not allow treatment on the field aka rugby, whilst the game continues. My bet is there would be less injuries! Would be considered as a defender as non-active so couldn’t play any opposition on-side.
