I've not seen that before. YC for persistent offending at a corner before the ball was in play! Technically, I assume it goes down as unsporting behaviour.

so many people around me going ballistic why attwell didn't award a pen

it's a foul in the area, get a grip ref...(or words to that effect!). always amazes me how fans (and players / managers) dont know the absolute basics

As somebody who had to try and explain to those around me why it couldn't be a penalty, I concur! Nothing new, but never ceases to amaze me!

Tried explaining it to my dad who had come down for the weekend (huge City fan like me). He must have come up with 4 reasons why it shouldve been a pen. He had seen one of the best refs in the country give just a yellow and had a qualified ref sat next to him explain it but no, he thought he was right! Football turns people crazy!

I thought second time that De Bruyne should just have kicked the ball in the corner so it moved a bit. Burn wasn't watching the ball and wouldn't have known it was in play.

Guimaraes maybe lucky not to get a red - took a long while for the ball to go out to get his YC. It was a scissors lunge but his feet were splayed so it was his crotch that brought Grealish down!

Totally in accord with the "Guidelines for Match Officials" section though, which states as follows:

Referees are reminded to make an early intervention and to deal firmly with holding offences, especially inside the penalty area at corner kicks and free kicks. To deal with these situations:

the referee must warn any player holding an opponent before the ball is in play

caution the player if the holding continues before the ball is in play
(Emphasis added).

Not seen the clip(s) but reading the posts it is of course the correct course of action, might be a difficult sell at most levels though

Hmmm... I somehow doubt a penalty would have been given if Rodri hadn't scored the third goal from a corner (Burn was holding Laporte for that). [4.42 at https://www.mancity.com/citytv/mens...wcastle-united-extended-highlights-1-63787624 ]

For the corner in question, Mr Attwell had already stopped the corner being taken for holding by Burn, Burn then did it again but somethig else happened off the ball and Rodri ended up on the ground, SA called the captains, then Burn held Rodri again and got the YC. The corner took nearly two minutes to take but only two minutes time was added (with 3 goals and several subs).

One thing - Mr Attwell did his best to stay out of the way, unlike the PL refs who get ahead of play and act as extra defenders.
