Man Utd v Southampton

Couple things I'm just curious on.

Salisu handball.
For me it was harsh, but he did jump with arms out and think it did brush his hand/arm. No card but felt it was blown too quickly and stopped an attack. So Southampton gained massively I think.

Then McTominays caution.
He's given foul. And loads of thinking time clearly.
He has stood for a while. Then saw to the downed player who points to his ankle and rolls on his side again before he then calls the physio on.
It looks like he has only cautioned him for the injury, not the tackle.

That delayed flag is ridiculous. You’re not gonna see a clearer offside. Ronaldo was miles off.

I know this debate has been done to death and I understand it if he’s one on one through and goal and it’s a tight one. Here he’s miles off and the flag doesn’t go up until he’s assisted the goal for Pogba. When everyone knows it’s offside like that just put the flag up

Was about to say same thing.
The lines on the floor would've helped hugely too.

Just before that, the assistant gives a throw to United.
It clearly came off United player last, think it actually hits his back side but the assistant may have been blind sided.
I'm sure the 4th official could see that at correct him?

Listening on radio and both commentators screaming for a yellow card for Shaw after an advantage was played following a "3-4 second" shirt pull @one

It was a lengthy shirt pull to be fair and not his first indiscretion either....

I'm surprised nothing given for Fernandes and Southampton player (name escapes me) for their wrestling match. Looked like Fernandes actually throws a punch but fails to connect.

All of Twitter upset that Shaw wasn’t booked. The amount of people who don’t know the laws never fails to amaze me.

Unless you’re calling it a reckless shirt pull 😉 . Bit unsporting actually to pull a shirt 😃

Romeu? Always worth a bet on him picking up a yellow :D

A rare but good event. Shaw tries to take his throw in quite back from where the ball went out of play and the ref tells him to move forward and take it where it went out of play!

Has there been a law change?
Since when is blatant cheating not a caution?

Haven't seen the incident but from the description it looks like a yellow was warranted. Why is it that you think it wasn't?

My stream cut out during this part of the second half (and numerous times, hence why I was also watching the Huddersfield game) so I’m not speaking through first hand experience here.

But from what I heard from someone else watching the game and giving me update, also a referee, it was just standard SPA where advantage was played. Thus if advantage was played, not a yellow. Hence why I found the Twitter meltdown funny.

Could be I was fed misinformation or that we are on about different incidents. But based on what I know, no yellow card.

Yeah if it was just a SPA and nothing else then no caution, but from @bester's post, it reads as though it was not just just a SPA USB, but also very likely a 'other' USB which still warrants a yellow card.

Don't agree, that is just bending the law to suit a desired outcome. A shirt pull can only really be SPA and Attwell was absolutely correct not to caution.

A prolonged shirt pull in many cases is USB even if it is not SPA. It cause retaliation and should have no place in the game. I have seen it cautioned without a SPA on many occasions in top flight and rightly so. It is subjective though so it cautioning can't be wrong in law neither would be not cautioning.

We’ve gone round this rabbit hole before. The question is whether the shirt pull would have been cautioned for USB even if there was not scoring opportunity. if the answer to that is yes, then it should be cautioned, as it wasn’t just a SPA. i think most if not all of us would say there is some level of shirt pull that would warrant a caution with no scoring chance was involved at all—but I think there is a pretty wide spectrum as far as how bad that shirt pull has to be before a caution would be warranted other than SPA.

Reactions: one
Although not specified law, a shirt pull has been accepted as a caution for years. The idea being that it often causes reactions, VC and mass con.
Are we pretending now that we've been cautioning for SPA only all this time?

Which of the USB codes do you normally caution for then?

Fair question. I must admit I can't remember what I've put in the past. (I've not actively reffed in a year or two)
Without checking, is there/was there not a "pulling" code?
If not I could only have put it under "other" really.

Frustratingly, the foxsports commentators in Aus explained the law change as 'ya can't get booked for a shirt pull if they play advantage' and made no mention whatsoever if promising attacks. You can imagine the confusion at grassroots.
