As a saints fan I have been been known to be a trade unfair on watching MoTD!

But this I think the officials got it wrong. The ball is played forward to lambert. This angle is not great but MoTD showed both lambert and Rodriguez were ONSIDE. Lambert runs AHEAD and both players now in the box. LAMBERT is about 2 strides ahead of Rodriguez - the ball is clearly played FORWARD. And Rodriguez scores.

Should it have been disallowed? - 25 seconds in.

No, he was onside. The ball is actually played ahead with quite a heavy touch from Lambert which allows Rodriguez to be onside. The ball is played forward, but Rodriguez runs onto it which means that's a negligible detail.

No he isn't. He's onside. Look at the lines on the field -- Lambert is where the grass turns from light to dark, when the ball is played Rodriguez is still well within the lighter grass area.

So are we saying the player that the ball is played to is behind the man and the ball at the time of the ball being played?

No because it doesn't matter if he's behind the man. We're saying he's behind the ball at the time the ball is played.

But he is also behind the man, even though that doesn't affect whether he's offside or not.

Just to add, it doesn't matter whether the ball goes forward, sideways or backwards. It's whether the player is closer to the goal than both the second rearmost defender AND the ball. In this case he is obviously closer to the goal than the second rearmost defender but not the ball so he is onside.

For example, if Rodriguez was ahead of the ball, and Lambert played it backwards, then Rodriguez ran back to get the ball he would be offside

Definitely true. I think his point was that if the ball was played forward, that's a good indicator that Rodriguez was ahead. While that is often true, in this case, Rodriguez ran onto the ball.

Fair enough I thought he was implying that he was offside just because the ball was played forward, as in the OP it says "LAMBERT is about 2 strides ahead of Rodriguez"
