Whilst I've plenty of sympathy with the player around the correctness of the initial ball in / out of play decision, his 'passing' of the ball was clearly after the whistle to stop play. Harsh call .. but a foolish risk for the player to take when already on a yellow card

I don’t know that we can tell if it is harsh when taken out of context of what came before. Has he or his team already been warned about this? I’m guessing there is history earlier in the game, as the R’s quicknes of the cards seems to make it pretty clear he knew it was a 2CT before he pulled the yellow. (Of course, we’re also assuming it is just for kicking the ball away and not for what he said as he did it . . .)

(According to wikepidia, he places in the Irish Premier league. I don’t know how they take public criticism of officials, but pretty common in the US for that to result in player fines.)

The kick, comes before the whistle......

Ball still active, as until the whistle, the referee has not stopped play. Randoms hand in air means nothing.

unless there is something the clip is not making clear, that appears to be lunacy from the official

Unless I'm going mad it absolutely does not!

The whistle might only be a quick peep but it's there, well before the player kicks it away

If thats the case I missed it. I do have music on!

not sure this is the ethos of, delaying the restart of play regardless

either way, based soley on that call and nothing prev that we dont know, Denis Irwin feels his pain.......

Yeah on face value it looks incredibly harsh.

But as @socal lurker says there might be something we're missing. The comms seem very accepting of the decision as well.

Expert referee media analyst!

My conclusion is that without context the yellow appears to be harsh but it’s perfectly acceptable within the laws of the game.

I wouldn’t be shocked if the player has omitted a few important details either!

I would hazard a strong guess that he has previously had a warning given how quickly the referee reacts. But of course the player isn't going to mention that in his post is he ... ? :)

Watched this highlight reel of the match.

I am amazed that ball actually was out of play. That was a quick flag and whistle.

The immediate pass even with the whistle just before the card seems harsh. Highlight reels do not normally provide background.

As a ref, I'll say, I wasn't on the field, looking down the line. It sure looks in not at all surprised at the quick pass despite the whistle.

14:16 is the marker. The whistle is sounded with a full second or two.

If kicking away was constant, then a prior warning...the card is earned.

I have had games, and see a lot of this going on the pro games, where in stead of kicking it, just picked up and carried...um briefly.

Nip it in the bud early and stop it.

Exactly what came into my head as well - if he's already pushing his luck with dissent then this would absolutely be enough to tip it over the edge for me.
