Non handball???!!!!

Anyone see it?

Shot from 20 yards away (at least) Plymouth player puts both hands above head, ball hits both hands/arms - no handball, even AFTER VAR review?

Not my teams, no fan interest and not posted to have a pop at officials, but really for my own peace of mind/interpretation of the handball law - that WAS a mistake by both on field officials AND at Stockley Park - yes?

The Referee Store
I think so. Like you, I had no interest in either team, however this did strike me as an odd decision. I couldn’t really think why it wasn’t given.

I watched it live and the moment I saw it I said penalty. I couldn’t tell you why it wasn’t

I know, normally as refs, we can find a reason or two why something was/wasn't given, against 'expectation' but I'm totally lost on this one.

The result made it a non KMI, if that makes sense, but still very odd!

Hard to tell for me in real time but does it not hit his armpit area?

During the VAR check, I was thinking 'well, this is a bog standard decision.'

Then, more time elapsed and I started thinking 'What's taking so long? Send the referee to the monitor already.'

Then, bizarrely, the on field decision stood! I was so confused.

They played the VAR audio on MoTD and Jared Gillett said something like "green zone", so I can only assume they thought it hit the arm above the armpit level.

Good to know they're using mythical terminology. 'Green Zone?'; come on FGS!

Ahh the diagram that supposedly depicts the man with the largest armpits ever seen 🤣🤣
The line between green and red is level with the armpit (with the arm in that position). Calling the side of the shoulder the "arm" is a modern take on it. We've just gone back to how it was interpreted for a century or more, till the tinkering started.

This is what I am saying.. The diagram has left seemingly our most senior officials confused about where the armpit ends and using the end of the short sleeve as the handball/no handball point!! Which is why the armpit solution to handball is just a ridiculous notion.
This is a clear as day handball offence

Wow. That has hit him in the under part of the arm where the armpit is. So unless it has hit him directly on the armpit, it has to be a pen. There is no "in line with armpit" under the arm. It's either armpit or arm. And it's not armpit because if it was it would have bounced differently.

I won't be surprised if they have been told to reduce the number of VAR reviewed handball penalties as the media pounced on the stats a few weeks ago showing they have doubled this season (or something like that).

That was going back to early VAR days when the PGMOL line was that the match ref never made a clear and obvious error, partly because they asked "Can you see how the referee got it wrong?" and if VAR could see how the ref had got it wrong. it wasn't wrong. (Is VAR talking to the ref, who's saying "I thought it hit under his armpit", or is VAR just going off what he sees?) Anyway, you can kill off the phrase "what football expects".

This is tough for me as someone who defends referees and VAR more than anyone! Whatever you think of the handball law - that's an offence.
