Matteo Guendouzi will face no further action over Neal Maupay incident

The Referee Store
Ah good. They’re all adults, no harm done. Dunno why we get our knickers in a twist about it really.

Edit to add: Hang on, think we're thinking about a separate incident here.

I'm an Arsenal fan and was hoping it would be a 3 match ban and joined that clown Luiz.

Strange why he got away with it.

It's frustrating really, because if that happened in a game I was reffing I'd expect myself to brandish a red card.
Am I wrong? Is this allowable? Should we consider this negligible force?
I can see it now, why you sending him off ref, Gendouzi got away with it.

Very lucky IMO. Taking a huge risk with the hands over the shoulders.

Be good to see a statement from Riley or whoever that can explain the lack of action,
If you are grabbing someone by the throat ( even if contact is minimal), you are acting beyond the expected level of contact, and, from the not great camera look, its a red card for vc

ref standing back whilst it all kicks off, old topic I know, but, standing watching it all happen can be justified... as long as you follow up with the sanctions
Most refs prematch will include..if there is a mass confrontation am looking for minimum of 2 cautions, ideally the two who started it.

for that incident to go without card aa the referee stands on watching, well, he would have been aswell in his changing room

I was chatting to a National League Referee just before lockdown and he was telling me that they get told that if there is a mass con to basically stand back because there are so many TV cameras covering the games that the FA can punish retrospectively, where as if they step in and get involved there can't be any reviews (other than an appeal by the player/club).

A "simple" change where a review board could upgrade a sanction where the referee has seen it could make a difference, it can obviously be downgraded if there is an appeal.

Does not wash. Player on a yellow, involved in mass con, no sanction, goes on to score winner then days later gets the sanction,
Players commit misconduct on the park, you deal with it, on the park.
Atkinson could have been proactive yesterday, his presence was null and void though, and as match referee in control of the game, well, it was a free for all
No sanctions for a lengthy mass brawl?
Sends out a message that its perfectly ok to do so,

I can only assume that the referee said in his report that he saw it and took no action, as that would prevent any retrospective action from being taken.

So Egan gets a YC and a further RC for a fraction of this and this clown walks away Scot free. One rule for the elite it seems??

Egan was more than a bit stupid. Balls are being disinfected when they go out, teams are getting changed in temporary places (including Liverpool in a car park portacabin), all of this being to reduce the risk of infection. So when two players go head to head there really is only going to be one outcome.

Guendouzi was also stupid but was just lucky that it wasn't spotted at the time, or it was spotted but they didn't see the full extent of it. But yes I agree, Guendouzi should be serving a longer ban than Egan, but one got away with it and the other didn't.

It simply has to be a ban. There’s no other way of looking at it than VC

Isn't it about time that retrospective action was taken whether the referee saw it or not........?

I don't think this is true because the assumption of Arsenal being elite probably isn't true anymore. :)

In all seriousness, I just don't see how a grab of the throat like that isn't violent conduct. If Martin Atkinson and his crew said they saw it and aren't taking further action, that's not right. If they missed it and VAR didn't come back to say, "We have to sanction Guendouzi for violent conduct", then VAR is wrong.

In any case, PGMOL has to account for this. The idea that a clear choking action (even if it's not actually choking the other guy) is not sanctioned needs to be explained.

EDIT - @LothianRef just beat me to it . . .

Its been a poor first week sadly for the referee teams, granted i have not seen all the games but goals nor given that should be, vc red cards missed and (1) (2) depending on your take, incorrectly awarded pks in the same game,
Debate over the Cahill tackle too, which, I did not feel was a red.
Poor lethargic week action wise, players and officials

I pointed out in the original thread that Atkinson appears to be doing absolutely nothing while all this is going on. I get that there are cameras and there's nothing stopping him from going home, popping on the Sky+ and noting down the incidents at his leisure.

But the referee's primary duty is to the safety of the players and (even putting coronavirus to one side for now), standing there and allowing a fight to go ahead with no effort to stop it poses a serious risk of someone getting hurt. It's weak refereeing on the day, it's bizarre that apparently VAR was eligible to get involved but chose to do nothing and it's simply pathetic from the FA hiding behind this outdated concept of the referee seeing it meaning that's the end of the matter.
