Pickford vs Newcastle

My games don’t have 4ths, so the ARS get those questions—my stock answer on a play I wouldn’t have called is “coach, he’s 40 yards closer than we are, so he had the best view.” (Unless I can honestly say that I didn’t see the play.)

The Referee Store
You can't defend the indefensible

But you can't hang the ref out to dry

Same with being senior assistant in a team of 3, just got to figure out what to say to keep the benches calm.

The ball was travelling slowly, it was blatantly obvious he was LIKELY to gain control.
Not just likely to gain control - he was a nailed-on certainty to get the ball and be left with only a single outfield player to beat, from less than six yards out. As @one says, if an outfield player had done that in a situation where the forward would have been left with only the keeper to beat, it would be a clear DOGSO red card offence - and it's an even better chance when the only player left in the way is an outfield player.

Am not big on the idea of refs explaining things to the media/fans etc, but, it would be amazing to get a ref to ref insight from Lee Mason on that as to his lack of sanction.

I dont mean that to undermine him or so, but, it be interesting to get his thoughts.

It's not just Mason, what about the AR?
For complex reasons, the relationship between the referee and assistants is often ineffective. The AR's obedient relationship with the ref paralyses the assistant even when the referee is dropping a bollock
This submissive behaviour stems from a need for united officiating and match control, but it often end with calamities which seem inexplicable

I had an incident when running the line on Saturday. Defender and attacker slide in, just outside the far edge of the PA (from my perspective). Defender is very late and should have received a cast iron YC. Instead the referee gives the FK to the defending team and protestations ensue. Because it's not on my side, I'm duty bound to remain silent. We must accept the referee's mistake, because of the dynamics of refereeing a football match

Back to Mason, the AR could have intervened, but the psychology of the submissive relationship probably explains why he didn't

At our level, getting involved from the other side of the pitch is just asking for trouble.
At Mason's level, there is no excuse whatsoever for an assistant not saying over comms: "Are we thinking DOGSO, Lee?"
If you watched the EURO 2008 documentary with Webb, you could hear this (something similar) in action.
I suspect a few top referees do not want other input though, for whatever reason.

The officials had a nightmare on Saturday ion this game.

One of the most nailed on red cards you will see all season.

Everton denied blatant penalty for tackle on Digne, the the Newcastle winner is comfortably offisde.

At senior levels referees will often say in the pre-match instructions something like "don't try to defend the indefensible" to the 4th official, even more so where they aren't miked up. I never really minded being 4th official, yes you could get some grief sometimes but I usually found a shrug of the shoulders did the trick, either by making them realise that I couldn't do anything about it, or more likely that they were wasting their time moaning at me.
