Go ask the parents...

Quick one, turned up for a game a couple of weeks ago and asked for CAR's to do throws. Home team offered up a coach but the away team told me to go ask the parents on the other side of the pitch. I did it, had a bit a of a laugh and a joke with them to be fair and one parent volunteered. Happy days.

Reading the rules of the competition it states that the clubs should provide one, now I had absolutely no issue approaching parents to ask, but what I worry about is not following protocol and putting other refs in a tricky situation. Was it ok for me to do this, or would you have asked the away team to sort it out?

Yeah I often go and ask the parents if clubs ask, no point insisting the clubs do it when there's a million other things for them to think about at that point (especially at youth) and making yourself seem pompous and self-righteous. I don't think there's anything wrong with asking them if the parents refuse (though I've never had this) but asking a first time is fine I think

Do it yourself but make sure the managers know it's their job. That way you don't make next week's ref job harder.

We don't use CARs but chasing teamsheets is a similar matter. If I am to chase it, which I usually do, I let managers know it's not my job to chase it but their job to deliver it.

I’m always baffled that some biased parents were even embarrassed to offer. I had more crap with silly calls so ended up ditching them all. Tough luck on the nippy strikers that get away with some and not others, at least I’m doing an equal honest appraisal at both ends. They certainly weren’t!

For me, the manager provides the CAR. It's easy enough to politely ask for them - I tend to go down the approach that when I do the kit inspection, I let the manager know I'd like them (the manager), captain and whoever is running their line in the centre circle in n (e.g. 10) minutes time. So a gentle prod rather than an outright instruction.

Start doing things the manager should be doing and you'll end up one day being the unlucky sod getting rid of the dog mess on the pitch as well.

I only asked them to do throw ins from their perspective, never even asked them to run the line so no worries about rules, that said they did point the flag the wrong way for each throw they gave. Not on purpose and I soon picked up that they were pointing at the team whose throw it was

Let's not allow this thread to go down what actions a CAR should / shouldn't do route...

@iamniallo You will often find at younger age groups the parent running the line will not only point the flag the wrong way, but will also run the entire line, rather than up to the halfway point. That is because they are confused by a round/spherical ball rather than an egg-shaped ball. A gentle reminder with a smile often works well.

Maybe they were ex Rugby officials!;)

Whenever a ball gets anywhere near the sideline it’s OUT.... complete waste of time some of them!
