Six Second Rule

If the law was changed to 15 seconds when would you blow for the IDFK?

For me you either stay with 6 or remove it from the LOTG.

I would certainly give it more thought but I would not be counting out loud to 15 or any other number regardless !

The Referee Store
I've done this for over 10 years and it seems to work.

and that is fine, not that anyone needs to answer to me but I don't hear anything to justify not penalising the 1st count when you get to 7. By LOTG you are duty bound to now give the IDFK.

That aside, any more, elderly among us give an insight as to enforcing the older steps law?

Let’s not beat around the bush. No ref does, anywhere. It’s a rule which needs changing to something more realistic like 15 seconds. It’s enough time for a keeper to get up and weight up his options, along with the ref getting back into position.
6 seconds is more than enough. Just watch the keepers whose team is trailing by one goal with 20 to go. :)

Futsal has 4 seconds and they release the ball within that time in 99%+ of cases.

As it is, the actual play time in football is limited, I am not in favour of legally allowing more 'dead ball' time.

You make a good point, image if the gk was booting from hand every time 3 secs after getting the ball....the ref would be all over the place, so you can turn it into a positive that the gk dallies on the ball.
making it 15 seconds doesn't stop the keeper from doing that. Imagine having this in law "the ball can not be kicked or thrown more than 30 yards because referees can't keep up" :)

no clearly the keeper can still release it in 3 secs at the moment, my point was the game would be entirely different for the referee if the gk had to release the ball within 3 secs, not, allowing them up to 15 secs and they still choose to release after 3

but I think you knew that

Yes. 15 seconds is hyperthetical but it’s far more realistic than 6 seconds. I’m just suggesting that it’s a timescale where the keeper who’s on the ground after making a save, has time to get up and weigh up what he wants to do next.

In tennis player has 25 seconds to get the ball, set up and take serve. GK should have so many seconds from receiving the ball to taking it.

Its quite astonishing that a keeper has six seconds to clear the ball from his hands but can take as long as he likes from a goal kick.

A winning keeper will swap sides for the kick to be taken, bang his boots against a post before he even thinks about taking kick

Tennis players also don't have to jog 15 yards to the hedge behind the goal and retrieve a ball from a ditch

He hasn't got 'as long as he likes' - he has as long as YOU the ref decides he has. Up to you when you say he is 'delaying the restart' and issue him with a caution. You DO see this happen quite frequenty - unlike penalising the six seconds!

Ok, there is no set time given but generally if a keeper is wasting time he will take 30-40 seconds each time at a goal kick, you add that up for say 8 goal kicks and easily knocking 5 minutes off a game.

Not if you're adding it back on.

Certainly does in my games. If it doesn't, there's nobody to blame but the referee

If this happened you would be getting 7/8 minutes every game added.

You might add a bit on for it but never comes to the full time they have wasted.

Im sure the 88th minute booking will make them quicken up next time.

Completely disagree, as I do add it on. It'll only be 7/8 minutes if you allow the goal keeper to waste 7/8 minutes of the game. Not sure why you'd wait until the 88th minute to make a point of it

A good referee should be right on top of this. If it even looks like the keeper is going to start wasting time he should be hovering around the edge of the area at the next goal kick making it clear he has his eyes on the keeper. It's a performance competency at levels 4 through to 2B.
