Just a talking to about conduct or if it was said with malice yellow at the most

I'd caution for this all day long. Games get out of hand (especially at youth level in my experience) if you don't hit this nonsense hard. Depending on the game and context, this could be a dismissal. I've had one game in which I didn't deal with this sort of thing and the outcome was massively different from subsequent occurrences

Yeah I see your reasoning and context is a major factor

Out of interest - what reason would you give for the caution?

I gave him a yellow for it.

I told the manager when ball was by him what it was for and he asked me what did they other kid say for him to say that, absolutely nothing (which he didnt believe)

Joe, seriously, you must get straight on this at outset because it leads to much bigger problems
Yeah I know obviously if it was jokingly said like a mate to a mate I would see it as banter but if it was said with malice then like I said above cards would be issued

USB Aggressive Attitude or Lack Of Respect. Code UB covers anything not otherwise specified, so lots of options
At certain ages, teasing can quickly progress to nasties in my experience

Joking and teasing aren't easy to differentiate. I feel strongly that these misdemeanors will lead to a lot worse, if they are not dealt with effectively

I think they can be easy to differentiate in certain situations. The tone of the game and voice/body language are hugely important factors. It is difficult to give a correct analysis of this situation when only being provided with the words. I guess this is really one of those “had to be there moments”.

I can't see where a red would come from, I don't see that 'hope you break your leg' could be OFFINABUS. It's different to 'I'm going to break your leg'.

Honestly, I vary between a talking to and a caution, depending on tone/manner, match mood, if we're talking about saying it just before the kick to well in advance, that sort of thing. But being in a different country, we may have a different tolerance level for sledging, hard to say. Everyone in your area on here has recommended a yellow so that's what I'd be taking on board.

I agree with @CapnBloodbeard that under the IFAB's Laws of the Game, this doesn't seem to meet any of the criteria for a red card. Interestingly enough (or not, as the case may be, but I find it fascinating the way things can be seen differently) in a game played in the US under NFHS Rules, this would be an automatic red card for 'taunting.'

As far as I an aware, this is because these rules put an overwhelming emphasis on sporting behaviour and fair play, and all the more so because their games involve school age children and the NFHS is concerned with developing and maintaining high standards of sportsmanship at these ages.

Just in case anyone's interested, the actual rule states as follows:
A player, coach or bench personnel shall be disqualified (red card) for:
[...]
taunting - use of word or act to incite or degrade an opposing player, coach, referee or other individual;
NOTE: The NFHS disapproves of any form of taunting which is intended or designed to embarrass, ridicule or demean others under any circumstances including on the basis of race, religion, gender or national origin.
