Just watching the Man City match. AR and ref signal a throw in to City. Silva takes it quickly and City are in. Hoffenheim appealed for the throw and because of that, and because City were in behind the Hoffenheim defence, the ref blows his whistle and orders a retake of the throw in? The only reason for the retake is 'game management' to avoid the risk of controversy. I really do believe that in instances like this, the idea of 'game management' has encroached into the realms of artificially manufacturing the game to suit referees, which imo is a grave road to be going down.

That wasn't game management, that was just plain incorrect. Game management is no surprises, and not allowing the quick throw was a surprise and caused the referee problems. Not really sure what he was doing.

He saw that 3 Hoffenheim players and stopped and appealed for the throw in so blew the whistle and then made City retake it. There is no question of it not being because of the fact City were in and Hoffenheim had all stopped to appeal imo.

An elite official doing stuff a L7 would get lambasted for. Nothing new
From the bottom looking up, it's hard to have respect for; or envy of one's elite peers

What about the officials behind the goal? Still oblivious to the benefit they provide?
Don't seem to add anything other than confusion.

Will they be done away with once VAR comes in?.

They were done years ago
I hope they're not in it for the exercise!
Why do they stand on the same side as the AR FFlipsS?

Seen some stand on the other side. be interesting to know any directive as to why majority stand on side close to AR.

They stand on the same side as when they tried them on the other side the referees said they were off putting as they are not expecting to see someone on that side so it caused a distraction.

They did one season on the other side, but referees were instructed to adjust their diagonal to be more central or even more over towards the assistant (the one with the flag, not the plastic one behind the goal … :)). Referees couldn't get used to it and complained, so the AAR got moved.
