Average Games Per Season

Level 7 Referee
Hi all,

I'm looking at getting an understanding of the rough average of games per season that referees here tend to do (Let's stick with officiating in the middle for now).

The reason I ask is I heard around the 40 mark was the average, but at the end of September I'd have done 12 which would (assuming that rate continues) mean that I'm looking at 84 games this season.

TL;DR - What is your average number of officiated games (in the middle) in past seasons?

Completely varies depending on the level you officiate at and your availability, especially whether you do both Sat and Sun

A few years back, I had a season at Level 5 where I wasn't in full time employment .. officiated in 102 games, the vast majority of which were in the middle.

Last year, at Level 4, I did 63 matches but only 40 of these were in the middle and only 11 of these were on my Supply League (rest a mix of County Cup, Senior Women's, U18 etc)

i know people who will be out refereeing some kind of football almost every day, they'll do vets, youths, girls, schools, open age etc with multiple games on some days and 5/6/7 a side on evenings when they're not reffing 11 a side!

personally i'll ref about 30 games (level 4 appointments mixed in with Sunday league) with 15/20 lines thrown in so probably not far from what you've heard!

As its my first season i cant really answer but im aiming to do four games a weekend two weeks from three.

I think if i meet that target il be looking at about 100 games.

Agree, plus Youth football is a lot more appealing to do multiple games in a row than OA.

That sounds bang on indeed.

I am only reffing my FA and county appointed games. Thats 2 in 3 saturdays and whatever else comes in midweek. I'd like more midweek games if I am honest but can only take what I am given.

I have packed in Sunday football.. I might, if I hsve a free Sat help out on the u21 league or if I am spare.

2 reasons for this. Main one is the Saturdays are so much longer nw. E.g. Sat I am leaving my house at 12 and dont expect to be home until after 7 so its harder to l justify bei g out Sat and Sun to the wife. Got to have some family time.
2. I feel like I have served my time at Sunday league. Sad, but thats the way it goes. The standard vs the players attitudes makes it just not worth it which is why I stick to the u21s as its a more controlled developmental environment. Sure some games are feisty but in the main they are pleasant games to referee.

A mate of mine referees over 200 games every season, much more than that in some seasons. My knees are screaming at me as I even type this ... :)

There's no right and wrong answer. The most I've done in the middle is 57, 88 in total that season, but these days I'd be amazed if I do more than 20.

I did Saturdays, Sundays and some weekdays last season. Did about 60 middles and about the same lines.

This season only did Saturdays due to other commitments and had about 30 middles and 20 lines.

I guess my average over the last 5 years has been about 45 middles a season.

I managed 24 last season, with about 4 months out due to surgery. So, I'd imagine it should be probably double that depending on your league schedule.

I'm not wild on the idea of two games in a day, especially as i get assigned to more challenging games. I would be interested in running the line during the week, but I've no idea how to go about finding games

Given your location, sure the Spartan league would be interested in giving you a try ... proper football, suited and booted, so out of the house for a good while but at least the flat fee is now suitable recompense. PM me if you'd like details ...
