Struggling to get appointed games

G Referee SCO

New Member
I have recently achieved becoming a referee, but now faced with the problem of getting appointed games. I received an information for probationary members handbook, this has a list of Association’s & league secretaries contacts. I have now contacted 7 league/match secretaries & they have all replied stating that they don't need any refs at the current moment. Has anyone else had this problem & can advise what to do next?

I am a member of the Glasgow referee's association

It's difficult because the season is ending so there isn't too much need at the moment - best course of action would be to speak to your RDO (Referee Development Officer) who will be able to inform you of the most appropriate thing to do from here.

I experienced difficulty getting games to begin with. Unbelievably, it took some effort to convince a Youth League to get me thru the 5 qualifying games (not sure if you have this in Scotland). In terms of Saturday grass roots football (down south), we seem to have passed a tipping point whereby there are more referees than games. My Saturday Refsec is able to pick & choose a bit. Sunday Leagues are still a bit short, but nothing like how things were a decade or more ago. There are tons of youth games without officials however. Personally, i think a few months of youth football is a good way to start out as you can get to grips with the process and laws before plying your trade in a harsher environment

1> its near end of "most" seasons, leagues will have their bank of refs and will rely on them, esp when you are talking titles, cups, relegation etc
2> Get to training, there are 3 different training areas for Glasgow, on different nights of the week, get to talk to folk, get to know who to ask and make yourself known too. Get to the meetings.
3> You really want to make it known to the Association manager that you wish to be considered for the Club Academy. His email address is avail in the book
4> Plenty summer tournaments, even to go to watch if not take part. Just turn up, say "hi am a new ref" and let it go from there
5> Schools are always looking for refs, again, the contact is in with your membership, dont expect a match fee, its for your development.
6> there is a girls fixture list each weekend, a lot of 7 a side U13 games, and upwards. Not quite a shortage of refs, but, its a good place to find a game.
7> I run private tuition for a small fee.....
8> point 7 is not strictly true

Welcome to the association.

I can PM you directly (if you want) the email of the gentleman who runs the Club Academy for Glasgow and the email for the gentleman who runs the girls football appointments, it's a great place to get started and learn your trade - running the line on an u17 Club Academy game is also a great experience and very close to what you'll experience in junior & senior football.

One of the problems with Glasgow is it's got an abundance of referees and getting regular games can be difficult especially if you are required to specify availability - a lot of the leagues I'm in (Sunday Central for example) have a rotation of referee's and you're not guaranteed a game every weekend even though you've marked yourself available therefore missing out on other leagues.

As Ciley said, schools are always looking for refs however they tend to kick off in the afternoon and if you work it might not work (doesn't work for me)

Thank you everyone for the advise.

I have an under 11's club academy game this weekend. Will be interesting as i'm a bit unsure of the rules of 7 asides. I know there is no offside & the games are 20 mins each half. If anyone has any advise about refereeing my first game at this level will be much appreciated.

Move to Suffolk! 7 aside normal rules, talk through decisions treat the kids with respect and praise good saves, good behaivour. Don't take any rubbish off parents
