Hi guys

Need a bit of clarification about a couple of incidents from today's game:

1. Home team attachng and enter the box. Defender comes across and shoulder charges at the attacker and shoves him off the ball. I award a penalty - was this the correct call? The goalkeeper was ouraged id given it
2. I book a player who is Chinese and I say to him and his skipper no more cynical fouls like he just commited. A player on the opposing team after the Chinese player id booked had gone away says no point telling him cos he doesnt understand English. Player from the Chinese players team hears this and says what did you say (in slightly stronger terms) - should I have sent this player off?

The Referee Store
1 - if you felt the charge was careless, reckless or using excessive force then you were correct to award the penalty

2 - if you felt the comment by the opposing player was offensive, you could have sent him off. If the comment by the player who responded was offensive, you could have sent him off

Definition of Racism.........The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races........

Massive over reaction IMO to the words allegedly said in the OP!!!....Potential ignorance but thats it!!!

This was my 5th game prior to the exam so I'm still learning but annoyed that I should have sent the player off

Don't beat yourself up over it......not an easy one to get right so early on in your career. Had it been directed straight at the player you probably would have had no problem in dealing with it.

Sometimes it's worth giving yourself a few seconds to think about what you heard before moving on with the game, but generally with things like this, your gut instinct is rarely wrong.......although sometimes we doubt ourselves because we can't believe that a player can be stupid enough to say something like that!

Just chalk it up to experience and move on.

If you can identify the player who made the comment, even if it's just a shirt number, might be an idea to have a chat with your RDO or discipline manager, explain what happened and how you now realise that this was a racist remark....see whether they have any advice to offer.

Or another definition....

prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior.

"no point telling him cos he doesnt understand English"" That may be a statement of fact!!! I don't see that as racism in any way!!

Chinese is not a country. China is a country ;). Chinese is a nationality as well.

As far as the OP questions, YHTBT for both cases.

China is 100% not a race though is it Mr Smarty Pants!!! So how can it be racist!!!

Is the words used anywhere near as important as the context and what the intent was? Is Balck a race? I am not sure but it can certainly be used n a racist context.
The word 'Chinese' is often used to refer to the race because they don't know what the name of the race is, sometimes the word 'Asian' is used. Anyway what the law requires for it is to be offensive. Being racist is only one way of being offensive.

Fair enough if that is your perception. But I can't form an opinion on it (racist or not, offensive or not, insulting or not) unless I am there and can understand the context and the intent.
