All that can be appealed without video evidence is mistaken identity, and in those cases the appealing club have to offer up the player that the red card should have been issued to.

when was this brought in? because only last season was a friend of mine down our CFA giving his version of events for a red card appeal ...

2014. It may be that the player involved in your friend's appeal was charged with misconduct as well as a sending off. Misconduct can be appealed, standard sendings off cannot.
