The Ref Stop

Wes Brown

The Ref Stop
No, but I can see why he gave it. Full speed it looked like he might have taken him out, in which case a red card would have been the correct decision. I didn't understand the delay between the challenge and Friend blowing his whistle.

When I watched it on MOTD I was amazed when he pulled out a red. I thought it was a fair tackle, he barely touched Adams and there was no lunge just a swift slide and tackle. Good strong defensive tackle for me, I have no doubt it will be rescinded in the coming week.

Totally agree with both of you!

Southend - You're right, the delay was very odd. No problem with a ref taking their time but I counted it at 4 seconds which for me, indicates a degree of uncertainty.

I was surprised.

I assumed (which one should never do) that the delay was possibly some advice Friend took from his assistant? I looked at and at first glance wondered if Brown went off the ground i.e. out of the control before the slide but he wasn't. It was correct textbook tackle.

We are not perfect and we all have an off day!

The red for sure will be rescinded and I am sure Friend will have a weekend off or a lower league fixture.

It was almost as if Kevin was off to follow play as he had turned a if to run and had a call over the head set and turned back to the incident.

I can kind of see why he gave it as you can see brown has both feet off the ground, and of course he did make some (minor) contact with Adams. It is kind of a relic - a tackle which would have been applauded in the past but is now seen as edgy an dangerous.

For the record I do agree that it shouldn't have been a red.

I feel for him, he made a big error in the Watford play off as well iirc. Hopefully he will be back in there soon.

Graham Poll has a section in the Daily Mail and he said that he thought. He might have got some guidance from his assistant in his earphone, which is why he waited and then gave it.

Confirming that decision has been overturned. Friend has been dropped for the next two rounds of matches - a harsh punishment?

Two games does seem a little but harsh. Interestingly, however, he's working with Martin Atkinson as an extra official tonight on the Zenit v Athletico game!

Although a ref should never guess, perhaps Kevin Friend thought in the current climate, where it seems every sliding tackle can be deemed a red card if you look at it long enough, it would be better to punish the tackle than not and be slaughtered for failing to punish a bad tackle. There must have been some communication or a doubt in the mind of the ref to make quite an obvious error.
