Level 4 Referee
Hi guys, wondering if any of you could offer some much needed advice. Had a 14s game this morning, very hard fought with nothing malicious coming from either set of players. I did, however, get quite a lot of flack from both sets of coaches until around the hour mark when I approached them and made it clear it would have to stop or they would be made to walk. Anyway, coach of the winning side (who told me pre match he was a former referee) comes up to me after the game telling me to keep my head up, stick it out, enjoy it etc. I think nothing of it other than an attempt to make up for his conduct during the game. About five minutes ago the very same coach, who I had no contact number for and vice versa, sent me a text saying I did well and I should stick in there and be myself. I'm very surprised and not sure what the next step is? Reply with a line of thanks or leave it? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds to me like he's trying to make sure you don't report him, I've had this happen a number of times when a manager realises what he's done or feels he may have overstepped the mark.

I'd suggest that you reply with something simple and to the point, maybe along the lines of 'Thanks **** (insert name of coach), good luck for the rest of the season!'. Was the behaviour of either coach serious enough to warrant a misconduct report? If not, just reply and leave it at that. That's what I've done in the past, hope this helps :)

Most of the 'ex-referees' you encounter are usually clubmen who perhaps do a referee's course and pass through then maybe whistle when they've no referee appointed, not full-on regular chaps & lasses

Take it with a pinch of salt mate, but next time you meet - without mentioning anything about this game - keep a lazy eye and ear open regarding his general behaviour, if it was a one-off, it'll not be repeated will it?

Don't have to be cynical, but a little 'un-common sense' is a useful tool to have in your skills box, necks and nooses usually cross paths eventually for regular sinners! And it might not be you involved mate!

Thanks guys, especially 'Top man in the parish', once I worked out what you actually said haha ;) It was a very, let's say, unusual incident and took me by surprise. The main thing is I was happy with my performance and never got into this business to be liked so a bit of positive feedback, however or whatever it is motivated by, is good I suppose.
