using a heart rate monitor

Is it just me????

I have a heart rate monitor with strap, ok it was a cheap £20 job from Argos and I just get readings all over the place. I used to have a Polar (model I forget) that I got of ebay which did the same, readings that should of made me dead. So I sold it again, but no complaints of it didn't work...

I want an Polar RS400 but as with all that I have tried so far I should be dead just sat in a chair, so I must be doing something wrong....

Anyone got any help or advice on how to wear one that will make me alive whilst sitting down and not have a heart rate of the scale whilst working out

Are the readings high or low? Or a combination of both?

Ordinarily, when I get strange readings off my Polar RS400 it's normally because the connectivity of the chest strap isn't quite right so tightening it a little or making sure the pads on the strap are thoroughly wet before I start sorts the problem out. Sometimes though I just have to press the strap against the chest firmly for a few seconds and it picks up ok.

Otherwise, I have come across a problem of the watch not reading it correctly due to the battery beginning to get a bit low so replacing it does the trick.

I've used a Polar HRM for a number of years and its usual for this problem to be something more serious.

I get both....
Whilst I was typing the OP before going running my heart rate was 105 but I find that hard to believe, then it just goes up and down like a yoyo.

I will try tightening the straps some more and double checking it when I wet the pads.

Could it have anything to do with the fat im packing a bit of extra timber?

I shouldn't think so :)

I have my HRM set to show %HRmax and the other day in the gym I was at 105% when I first put it on! A quick readjustment of position and tightening and that quickly dropped to 35%

Tightening the strap helped a great deal, much better readings but still get the odd one or two that's well out, but then I guess this is the same with everyone.
I never thought you would need it so tight to get a reading but then when I think about it if its moving around too much the readings will be false.

I am confident that once I upgrade to an RS400 the readings will be much better

Certainly not me! I do it once in a while when I remember.

I have a sigma hrm with chest strap. Awesome for the most part, but occasionally it used to inform me my heart rate has jumped past 230 or something.... Tighten chest strap, no longer does it. Terrified me first time I saw it.

LOL I bet it did.....

The first time mine said my heart rate was over 220 I was sat down doing nothing and thought christ I should be dead not looking at refereeing football
