The Ref Stop

Tottenham vs Chelsea

The Ref Stop
I think both were red cards. For the first - he went studs up and hit him clear in the shin off the ground with the ball well gone. And the second was premeditated elbow to the head. I can't believe VAR has not got involved in either really.

If it's true that var called the kulusevsku one 'accidental' (according to sky) then its an appalling decision.

Both are nailed on reds

I can see why the Caicedo one wasn't sent for review, definitely caught him on the shin but force was fairly low, wasn't a tackle as such and rather more of a missed attempt at kicking the ball. He certainly couldn't have complained had he seen red, but I can just about understand why he didn't.

Can't even begin to back the Kulusevski one though, and if they really did look at it and say it was accidental then I'm afraid that calls their professional ability into serious doubt. To use a football phrase, he's done him there, there'd been niggle all through the game and the only reason his elbow was there to make contact with the head was because he wanted to hurt Lavia. There's an argument to even say it was VC rather then SFP, he's just deliberately slammed his elbow into an opponent's head. I know the dark arts from my playing days, and that was 100% intentional, be intrigued to see how Howard Webb explains this one.

That said, I'm kind of glad neither were red as it might have spoiled what was a great game (unless you are a Spurs fan I guess).

Jon Champion was the play by play commentator on the US NBC broadcast, and about 27 minutes in he had the perfectly understated assessment of the referee crew’s performance.

“(He) has a light hand on the tiller.”

This perspective is exactly why we do t see more reds. And not seeing reds is why players feel safe engaging in risky play. and why when it goes too far, it is the ref, not the miscreant, who gets blamed for ruin8ng the spectacle.

I think the reason the second one wasn't reviewed is because the first one wasn't.

The second was a much clearer red. Can't be accidental. That elbow doesn't belong there in any shape or form. Definitely not for the type of challenge he was doing (not an airial ball).

I can accept the Caicedo tackle not being reviewed, it's high but there is no force behind it, should of been a yellow card but not enough for a red.

The elbow incident claiming to be accidental is a great cop out by the VAR to not interfere in an entertaining game, I'm not sure exactly how much contact there really was as the Chelsea's player reaction to go down was not instant(which may of influenced the VAR) but it looked deliberate and if he did get sent off and it ruined the game after, then all the blame should be on the Spurs player and no one else.

Let's not forget though, Anthony Taylor was looking right at it and didn't give anything so who knows if what he said to the VAR may of influenced things.

Agree with everything except your last paragraph. For me, a fully justified red card not being given should never be excused on the basis that it might ruin the game.

Dermot Gallagher supported the VAR for not recommending a review for VC
Is it any surprise the football community holds us in such low regard? I can't watch that half hour segment on Sky Sports News, but I also can't avoid it when clips are shown on repeat

Here are the incidents if anyone wants to watch them:

Caicedo I can understand, Kulusevski I just can't. Anthony Taylor had a perfect view too, so surely that's the only possible reason for VAR not recommending a review?

We should add credit to Lavia for trying to carry on. If he'd have gone down like the challenge deserved and most players would I can't help but wonder if it had been different. We rightly bemoan players' theatrics making our lives difficult but I can't help but wonder here whether the lack of them contributed to the decision.

the inability to say it as it is (and how everyone else sees it) fascinates me

Exactly, he has elbowed an opponent for the sole purpose of elbowing an opponent
Say what you see!
We don't have an ex-pro Ref suitable for the TV. The American female ref at the Euros is the only one we've encountered who was good

You misunderstand me, I Know it should have been a red card, but purely for my own personal enjoyment I'm glad it wasn't.

Can’t help thinking the Caicedo one has gone because of the Everton-Brentford game last week. “It was momentum and unavoidable” or some such from the review panel; instructions from on high saying don’t bother boys.
