I am still waiting for my first match as an observer so I'll keep posting until the social media ban kicks in!

I had a top div lino work on a game the other day - he has the whistle and was great. We talked loads. He said he always takes the names of the keepers as they are the players you are most likely to talk to as AR. I did and he was right. It came in handy. I will do that in bigger games.

In Finnish "pilli" means whistle. And the surname comes before the first name in a lot of contexts.
I don't think he would mind me telling you, we have a referee called "Pilli Joel".

Its the same as always making sure you know the left back names, something made more difficult since squad numbers replaced 1 to 11.

That's clever, never thought about that. But I'd forget the names of the players by the time the game started! I have trouble remembering the referee's name if I'm on the line! I'm awful for names.

Write it on your hand

Absolutely. I always wrote both captains names on my hand, and if on the line the two left backs and, if I didn't know him well, even the referee's name. Nothing worse than trying to get the ref's attention and having a mind blank and having to shout "ref, ref".
