Davy Klaassen was sent off for Ajax with the score at 2-1 as shown in the video but it appears online that he was allowed to continue as both sides agreed to play on with 11 a side. Surely a terrible look for an affiliated match with professional teams even if it's a friendly?
Agreed. What is the point of the send off if he is allowed to play?
You either do your job properly or you don't. If you do it properly he can't play. If you are not too fussed about doing it properly in a friendly, don't send him off. But send off and let him play is just ridiculous.
There are other ways of getting around the Laws to make it 11 v 11 but the sent off player can't play.
Really not a good look and something you wouldn’t really want to see a grassroots referee do. Add to that the fact that the challenge for the red card isn’t a particularly good one. There could have easily been someone wanting to dish out a bit of revenge on Klaassen for it. Which the referee has basically enabled.
I’d imagine the referee will find himself in some hot water.
This happened a few years ago as well in a friendly involving Wolves played in Spain. Can’t remember who the other side were, but both sides had 2 sent off before half time and then it continued 11v11 after half time. Baffling.
