Sturridge penalty shout - Liverpool vs Newcastle

SM

The avuncular one
as is well known, I support Liverpool. Just get that out the way nice and early!

The Sturridge penalty shout, mid second half of this game. Tiote sticks out a leg which Daniel promptly falls over. When I first saw it it looked like a penalty. When I saw it again my ref head kicked in and I thought perhaps not would be a soft penalty, but anywhere else on the pitch, that's a freekick.

Why is there still a difference between a freekick outside the box and what would be called a soft penalty if the exact same thing is given in the box?

Well, I haven't seen, and I'm a scouser born and bred (500 miles away from Toxteth) so definitely a nailed on penno for me there Macca.

PS Terry McDermott is and always will be god. After god, Macca. After Macca, Rafa. Definitely a pen.

I'm a Liverpool fan too, but at first viewing I thought it was never a pen. On the replays it looked more like there was a case to me but yeah, went down way too easily...

Because us referees are, despite popular opinion, human!;)

Hence we take the consequences of our actions into consideration.

You get a foul call wrong in the middle of the pitch, its unlikely to be a game changer, get it wrong in the PA and it very likely will be.

Unrelated analogy alert - If you're driving past a school at 3.30pm , you're much more likely to keep to the speed limit than you are on a deserted road - its human nature.
