The Ref Stop

Stoke vs. Man Utd

For those who saw it, it was almost comical when Mark Clattenburg had to suspend play for 10 minutes because of hail (as you can see from my new profile picture). If this happened at our level (particularly park football) would you have done the same thing? It was clear that he suspended play because he could not see the ball, but the players also appreciated the shelter - something which would not be forthcoming at park level.

The Ref Stop
Yeah I've done it. Had hail stones the size of golf balls coming down so we all made a quick run for the dressing rooms. We were in there for around 20 minutes before play resumed

If you can't see the ball then there is no other option! As for players wanting shelter, tough luck! Unless young youth games, I regularly get emails receiving reminders about the protection of children when it's cold.

One other thing that happened in the game. Stoke wanted to make a sub at the next stoppage, this happened to be when shawcross got injured, they went ahead subbing the player they originally wanted to sub, then when the substitution procedure was complete, stoke changed their mind and wanted to take shawcross off instead , so they brought the player back on who went off and took off shawcross. Mark clattenburg was aware of this and authorised it. I wanted to know if in LOTG he is allowed to do this or not because the substitution procedure had been completed. Play hadn't restarted and it was all in the same stoppage.

Thoughts?

That incident confused me too. Initially I thought the fourth official put the wrong number up! I think that because the substitute had not yet come on, the substitution had not been completed so it was okay.

If you can;t see the ball or pitch markings properly you have no option but to abandon?

As for the sub, I was under the impression that the 4th official had been informed of who to change and had set the board. The next stoppage saw a player being injured and treated and Stoke staff wanting to change who was substituted. The board got held up with the original change showing and the players involved followed that - then had to revert.

Not sure at what point in the process the substitution is 'locked in' but it just appeared that because of the injured player, the whole process got a bit confused, add a bit of miscommunication, plus freezing cold fingers trying to operate a pen and notepad or an electronic scoreboard.

I got asked to do a local schools game a few weeks back, they were only youth under 13's players. The wind and hail was blowing them all of their feet, let alone being able to see the ball... Completely unplayable, and made a quick dash for the changing rooms! Went back out there 10 minutes later.

right, just found a video of the incident:

Now I would like to know why the referee's are wearing Football League badges on their kits, and not premier league badges?

Yep, but here we were discussing hail.

What I was saying is that because its wet or cold you don't let the players to go and get shelter because of it, there has to be a more obvious reason, just because they want shelter from the rain or cold.

What if it becomes farcical? Does the integrity of the game then play a part? What about age? I'd include 'veterans' in the same group as small children, vulnerable?

Does having soaking wet, cold players help your game by making them play through hail or an F8 gale when wet?

You don't bow down to players and give in when they ask for anything. As referees, we are there to protect the safety of the players, and make sure the game is played in accordance with the laws of the game.

We therefore have to make the decision on whether or not the weather that is being played in could affect the safety of the players.

I've played in snow and hail before, fog where you can't see the other net, and as a player you get on with it. It's not your place to become the referee, it is up to the referee to make that call.

The decision has to come down to the safety of the players.

And of course as I have said, on whether you can still see the ball, as was the case here!

Sorry Jojo, I'm playing the devil's advocate

This was being debated years ago when I first started, I think we agreed on "Judicious use of the powers given to me as referee" if asked why we did or didn't suspend/abandon a game due to whatever lol

It's topical for society meetings to chew over though, I'll throw this one into the ring during match incidents in a fortnight's time

Haha fair play!

I'm welcome to hear your opinion, I was just putting mine across!

Tell me what they say!
