The Ref Stop

Southend vs. Oxford

Southend-ref

Southend United Supporter
Level 6 Referee
This game is being televised and the referee, Dean Whitestone, is receiving more praise than I have ever seen a commentator give a referee.

It's a breath of fresh air, but I wonder whether they have looked at BT Sport who, from what I have seen, tend to be more referee friendly, and reckon that this could be to try and get an advantage when bidding for matches. I know that it is almost all money based but promotion of the referees in the media is in the Premier League's interest and so they may be more inclined to choose a broadcaster who show referees in a better light. Thoughts?

I think you might be reading too much into it, I think it's got mere to do with the individual commentators; I've always found that Andy Hinchcliffe in particular is very complimentary of referees. Either way, it's very good to see!

The ref has had an excellent game, got everything spot on for me. Great third goal by the way! :D

Are you saying that somebody who's not a Southend or Oxford fan was watching it??

I might be there! No chance against the mighty Dale!:rolleyes:

We'll see!
Might be forced to eat my words - hopefully should all be ok by the end of the season!

I ran on the pitch last time - and no doubt I will this time as long as everything goes to plan!!:D

Breaking the rules? I'd expect better of a referee!

I listened to BBC Radio Oxford's commentary, they too praised the referee's performance, and those 2 broadcasters can be more than a little 'partisan'

It came across that Southend were the better team - especially the lad on loan from Norwich, and the referee had a good game.

Haven't been watching it, but listening to the Utd-City derby on 5 Live Alan Green is being very complimentary of Michael Oliver - it's like London buses, you never hear a commentator praise a referee and then you get two at once!

He has been very good to be fair to him. Although, he did miss a Fellaini elbow, which he had a perfect view, about 5 yards out and booked him for it.
