U18 match getting a bit heated. Player says to me that’s a booking ref! I say to him quite calmly….do you know that asking for another player to get booked is a bookable offence?
He says “book me then!”
I call him over and give him one last chance to apologise and he carries on so I gave him his request and booked him for dissent and sent him to the sin bin.

I felt dissent was the right call here, but as always I am happy to be corrected by wiser heads.

While I’m asking, what’s the correct procedure to reintroduce after sin bin? I usually wait for a break in play?

Law states (and was changed to this for the current season):

Once the temporary dismissal period has been completed, the player can return from the touchline with the referee’s permission, when the ball is next out of play.

(As an aside, I don’t use the term “booking” as it isn’t supportable in Law. ‘Caution’ etc)

If you ask players silly questions, you can’t then be too shocked that you get a silly response. Especially at that age level where a lot of them may see themselves as smarta*ses.

You definitely don’t want to then ask someone to apologise to you. That is very rarely going to end well.

‘That’s a booking ref’

Option 1- ignore it, depending on how vocally they have said it

Option 2- ‘not for me’

Option 3 (not my favourite option)- sin bin without the apology route.

Agree, asking players to apologise is never going to end well, nor is getting into a debate with them. I'd probably say something like "don't think so" or "not for me", then move away. If he chooses to run after me to keep complaining then he's set up nice and easy for a dissent caution.
 
Was halfway through this post and @Runner Ref put it far more eloquently than I could.

All I would say is you are digging yourself a deep hole if you are going react to every comment (or comments like this). Over the period of 90 minutes, you are going to get all sorts of requests for foul throws, offsides and freekicks.

Not sure it's worth your time trying to educate players in the heat of the game, especially an U18 who will always have a response.

I would introduce a 4th option to Runner Ref's menu...

If the request for a booking was public and could be heard by other players/coaches, you can book the offender for USB, it is in the same sphere as waving an imaginary card, saves you having a conversation you're never going to win and then walking them off the dissent plank.

i tend to say i was thinking about it (cautioning). but you've changed my mind.
