Silent weekend....excellent initiative

The Ref Stop
Yep. Received emails about it, and the twitter feed is nearly devoted to it!

Excellent initiative, unfortunately my game tomorrow isn't covered with this I don't think, although that could change, as there has been a lot of publicity surrounding it recently, and the league has sent out information regarding it.

Yep, seems like a really good idea, it's been well publicised. Unfortunately I don't think that either team from my game tomorrow has signed up to it.

Really like the idea of parents not being able to shout abuse, but does the "silent weekend" mean that they can't shout positive things to their kids?

Sounds like a good initiative - however, I was thinking they should go for a 'Silent Year' event which they could perhaps do annually. Might make refereeing a bit easier!

I don't like the idea of no positive shouting because I think that that is a part of football.

The aim is to make it quieter, not totally silent. It encourages celebration of goals and applause when something is good, just no shouting. Surely applause still creates a positive atmosphere?

Yep, what Matthew said. The aim is to make the match quieter. The coaches are not allowed to shout neither, they make their pre match and half time talks, nothing else during the game.

The silent year - they are trialling this out just for one weekend, not to make it set in stone, in a way. They wanted to see how popular it would be, and how many clubs would actually do it. It has received wide spread publicity, and hopefully it will make parents quieter in future matches.

I understand what they are trying to do and I love the idea of no one being able to shout abuse or negative comments but maybe instead of making the parents and coaches be silent for the whole game, they might be better off tackling the negative comments only and letting parents shout encouragement because I think that if the match is completely silent (apart from applause) it ruins the whole football experience like I have said previously.

What they are saying is that players are receiving instructions left right and centre, and they are not being able to make their own decisions and play how they want to. That is why it is silent, and also why the coaches are not allowed to shout instructions, just their team talks.

My twitter feed seemed to say it was effective enough. Good luck to them i say
