The Ref Stop

Send off for banter?

In a professional match, normally, if a player swears at the fans then he's off. But at the Southend game yesterday (@jojo you may have noticed) we were all singing to our own goalkeeper "your mum is a MILF" to which he responded with his middle finger. It was banter, but as it could have been taken the wrong way, especially with children in the crowd, would there be a case for a send-off?

I didn't notice no. But I do think there would have been a case there if he wanted to, but it depends on whether he noticed it too I suppose.

I don't really think it's a case for a referee to get involved with. If it's at the other teams fans then possibly, but we do need to use some common sense in dealing with things like this. Banter between a goalkeeper and his own fans is just that, we don't need to be rash and make silly decisions. Leave it to the retrospective action team at The FA to deal with, I would say :)

Personally, I would have a word with the goalkeeper and ask the keeper to not get involved with the crowd like that....

But in the FL is there room for a referee to use his common sense? Maybe on the local park yes, but in the Football League I would question that.

I didn't say I would act, just that the referee could've acted:)

Of course there is. I'm sure The FA aren't expecting robotic referees to reply to any slight possible infringement of a law.

And if it was the Dale 'keeper towards you lot...;)

But what I said was he did have the scope to punish the offence, which is true, if the referee felt like he wanted to he could've sanctioned the goalkeeper for what he did.

And there may be some use of common sense, but no where near as much at grassroots football. I would say common sense is minimalistic at the FL.

We wouldn't have shouted at our keeper in the first place:p:D
