Yes, you need to report it. Add the teams on WGS and put it as an extraordinary incident. If they will do it in a friendly they will sure as hell do it in a competitive game, so in reporting it you may well save future referees from the same grief.

In terms of what you could do differently, it is very difficult to say without having been there.
