Taison (Shaktar) was sent off for offensive gestures and kicking the ball at the Dynamo fans, who were racially abusing him.

I understand that the referee has to protect himself, but would he really see repercussions if he just sent the players inside like he did after the red anyway?

He is not protecting himself. He is protecting the integrity of the game (both the send off and suspending the game). It may seem harsh but imaging the president he would set if he did not show the red card for offensive gesture. Players can't retaliate to offensiveness with offensiveness and expect no repercussions no matter how bad they have been offended.

It would be up to the league how to deal with it.
