Penalty or no penalty?

So match today, 3-3, A9 bursting through on a long ball over the top, H2 chasing after him, neither in control of the ball, slight coming together and A9 goes down in the box, screaming for a PK. For me personally not enough in it for a foul but they were adamant.

Any thoughts? Appreciate it’s hard without footage etc.

Hard or impossible. . . Ultimately, you were the ref, and only your opinion matters. If you didn’t think there was enough for a foul, then there wasn’t. And it’s no surprise the attacker’s team was adamant that it was a foul, which they likely would have been if there was no contact and he tripped over his shoelaces.

As already suggested, it's impossible to say, but let's try flipping it around to change the context.

If it had been H2 that went down under the same challenge from A9 would you have given a defensive free kick in the box? If so then a penalty would seem to be the correct decision.

Slightly disagree.
1 is a safe foul to give that no one will remember and the other is not a safe foul that everyone will remember you for.

OP without footage we can't determine whether the contact was careless or otherwise and who initiated the contact etc. It's an unanswerable question.

I agree with your slight disagree, and came to the same conclusion whilst out in the car earlier. We do (and should) set a higher benchmark for infringements on the penalty area.

It's the reliable phrase that gets trotted out by the pundits - "anywhere else on the pitch and that's a foul". Correct, but also anywhere else on the pitch there isn't a 70-80% chance of a goal resulting from the foul decision.

If you want to know why a penalty foul (or any foul resulting in a red card) has a different standard than other fouls, have a think about how much money and resources as been spent on VAR and despite not getting it right they insist on using it :)
