The Ref Stop

Penalty appeal

SM

The avuncular one
Long ball for a quick winger to chase into the box wide to the left of the goal. A defender is in front of him but the winger is faster and about 5 metres before goal line the winger nips in front of defender. Defender is running straight and as he nips in the winger goes over the defenders stride as he runs.

I am in a decent position and am closer than nearly anyone else (I am pretty quick over the ground still). I say no penalty on the grounds that the winger has gone over the defenders leg rather than the defender making any kind of challenge.

It happened very quickly and there was no chance for the defender to do anything else.

Thoughts?

The Ref Stop
Not a lot either way. The man who went over asked why no penalty but aside from that fairly quiet. A defender wanted a caution for the winger for a dive. Nothing special.

I suspect the defending team would have reacted more strongly if it was given, just because of the nature of the incident.

Both teams were also well aware of what happened to me a couple of weeks ago and I suspect this helped as they behaved very well throughout!

That would say you were bang on then. Player reactions are often a good indicator to a decision.
